Late Coyote comeback denies Women's Soccer
10/9/2022 4:07:00 PM | Women's Soccer
St. Paul, Minn. - South Dakota converted a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute and added a go-ahead goal in the 84th minute to rally to Sunday's 2-1 road defeat of Tommie Women's Soccer in Summit League play at South Field.
Sophomore Abby Brantner scored in the ninth minute, assisted by Annika Eckroth, to build a 1-0 lead for the Tommies (6-5-3 overall, 2-3-1).
The Coyotes (3-6-5, 2-1-2) had no shots on goal over the game's first 75 minutes. They created a corner-kick try in the 76th minute, and a handball was called on the Toms. The Coyotes converted tio tie the game, and rode that momentum to score another goal moments later.
Quoting Coach Sheila McGill
"I think we came into the second half (feeling) overconfident. The first half we came out ready to play and really dominated that half. We talked about it at halftime that (South Dakota) is a second-half team. We came out (playing) casually, and that's not OK... I don't think we gave them the credit that was due. There's not a gimme or an easy game ever.
"We need to be present and show the work rate and put in the work off the ball. It was not even the goals that were scored it was that we stopped playing, we didn't connect and do the things we needed to do. Overall, it was a learning moment. Even if you dominate one half, that doesn't mean the second half will go the same.
"I'm frustrated. The team's frustrated. But we need to grow and be ready against the next two opponents. It's one game, one weekend at a time."
