Billing, Malecha with strong performances, not enough against No. 5 Wisconsin

Madison, Wisc. – For the second time in as many nights the No. 5 ranked Wisconsin Badgers lived up to their national ranking in dealing St. Thomas a 9-1 setback at La Bahn Ice Arena on Saturday night.
The first period belonged to Wisconsin (5-1-0). The Badgers scored four times in the opening 20 minutes, each goal coming off the stick of a different skater. They outshot and outdrew the Tommies 23-6 and 15-9 respectively.
The Tommies (0-2-0) opened the second period on the power play and quickly clawed back into the game. Gabby Billing scored her first goal in a Tommie uniform assisted by Nicole Vallario and Jenna Hartung to bring the Tommies within three.
That is as close as it would get however, as Wisconsin added four more in the second period to match their first third effort and then finished with one final tally with 3:12 to play in the third.
Alexa Dobchuk started in goal for the Tommies and stopped 30 shots in two periods. Freshman Maggie Malecha relieved Dobchuk to begin the third. She racked up 15 saves and allowed just one goal on a Badger power play in her first collegiate appearance.
Did You Know?
The last Tommie goalie to allow just one goal in her collegiate debut was Saskia Maurer on 10/02/21. Maurer played all 60 minutes and saved 28 Bemidji State shots in the 2-1 Tommie victory.
Gabby Billing scored 15 goals in her three seasons playing for Dartmouth.
The Tommies were the first team to score in 2022-23 at La Bahn Ice Arena.
