Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Sophomore goalie Saskia Maurer and her teammates recorded Tommie Women's Hockey's first shutout of the Division era as she stopped all 11 shots on Friday and helped the Purple take a 3-0 victory over Franklin Pierce in non-conference play at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Maurer and Co. helped limit the Ravens (0-2) to just three shots on goal over the game's first 49:00. Franklin Pierce peppered Maurer with seven shots during a third-period power play but was unable to break through on the scoreboard.
The Tommies' 37 shots on goal was one off their D-I record of 38 set in October 2021 in a win against RIT.
St. Thomas (1-2) scored its three goals in a 6:45 stretch of period two, as senior Maija Almich, freshman Molly Grundhoffer and graduate student Anna Solheim lit the lamp. It was Grundhoffer's first college goal. Sophomore Maddy Clough contributed two assists, and Brieja Parent and Allie Monrean had one assist apiece.
Quoting Coach Johnson
"I think we did a much better job holding onto the puck. Wisconsin had played four games already and they were ready to go (last weekend). We were a little bit caught off guard. Today we had two more games than they (Franklin Pierce) did and so maybe we were a bit more prepared. I expect tomorrow to be a much more competitive game."
"I think it is easier for a goaltender to play when they are facing a ton of shots than when they are not. In particular in the third period when she (Maurer) saw some good opportunities against and she was squared up on the puck and really focused. What I liked in the first and the second was that she was engaged in the play and ready to play the puck."
Next Up
The teams close out the weekend series with a 6 p.m. puck drop here Saturday evening.
