Bianchi and McCauley notch first points of the season, not enough to defeat Huskies

10/28/2022 8:34:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Mendota Heights, Minn – St. Thomas' late goal in the third period was not enough as the Tommies fell to the St. Cloud State Huskies, 4-1 in WCHA play on Friday at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

The opening period between the Tommies and Huskies ended in a scoreless stalemate. St. Thomas had two opportunities on the power play but could muster just one shot to challenge the St. Cloud defense. Meanwhile the Purple's goaltender Saskia Maurer stayed perfect in net, chasing away all eight shots faced in the period.

That scoreless tie was broken in the ninth minute of the second period by St. Cloud State. The goal was one of four for the Huskies in a seven-minute span. The visitors unleashed 17 shots in the middle third to just three for the Toms. St. Thomas' struggles on the power play continued, going 0-1 in the second.

The Tommies began the final period with just over one minute with a one-woman advantage remaining but could not notch a goal. Their special teams had another opportunity when Taylor Lind was called for a five-minute boarding penalty. They could not get one by Huskie goaltender Sanni Ahola who blocked all four Purple shots.

Emma McCauley turned a broken St. Cloud play into a perfectly placed pass to Luci Bianchi who tallied her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to three goals with 4:36 to play. McCauley's assist was her first collegiate point.

Maggie Malecha was called off the bench to begin the third period and continued her strong play in net. She stopped six shots to bring her season save percentage to .955.
