Game Notes -- Men's Soccer has Saturday night road test at Omaha

10/14/2022 12:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer

St. Paul, Minn. - Tommie Men's Soccer (2-7-2 overall, 1-0-1 Summit) has a tough road test awaiting on Saturday Oct. 15. After playing four consecutive home games, St. Thomas plays at Omaha (5-4-1, 2-1) with a 7 p.m. start.

The Purple became the first St. Thomas Division I team to tie or beat a top-10 ranked opponent as it played powerful Denver to a 0-0 tie over 90 minutes last Saturday at South Field. The last time No. 10-ranked Denver was shutout after getting 12 or more shots on goal was in 2004. Saturday's outcome avenged a 3-1 Tommie loss to Denver on the road in 2021.

The Toms are 1-1-2 over their last four games with just four goals allowed.

Opponent Watch

Omaha has conference wins over Southern Indiana and Western Illinois, and lost just 1-0 to Denver. Last season the Mavs came to St. Paul and lost 1-0 as an early Tommie score stood up for the game's only offense. The Mavs have a younger roster with 14 sophomores and six freshmen eligibles, and only seven players with three or more seasons of college soccer play.

Awards Talk

Junior goalkeeper Tucker Mann made 12 saves against Denver and was named to College Soccer News' 13-player National Team of the Week; to Top Drawer Soccer's 11-player National Team of the Week; and also was named the Summit League Men's Soccer Defense Peak Performer of the Week.

Rescheduled

The Oct. 1 conference game vs. Oral Roberts was postponed after the sudden tragic death of ORU senior captain Eugene Quaynor in a car accident.

That contest has been rescheduled for OSU's field in Tulsa next Wednesday Oct. 19.

Magic Number

St. Thomas is 93-4 over the last eight seasons in games when it scores two or more goals (2-1 in D-I era, 91-3 in last six D-III seasons).

Did You Know?

St. Thomas is 5-7-2 in its last 14 games since the end of last season, including a 3-2-2 home record.

St. Thomas has allowed 22 goals in six road or neutral games but only five goals in five home games.

Sophomore Faris Colic and freshman Carver Tierney scored goals in back-to-back games vs. Eastern Illinois and Gonzaga.
