Both St. Thomas (0-8-2) and opponent Western Michigan (2-3-4) brought high offensive ferocity to today's match at South Field, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Tommies struck first with a header by freshman Charlie Holton in the 35thminute, and the Broncos equalized with one of their own in the 65th. The non-conference match-up was packed with tough attacking and fervent defense.
The Broncos' offensive was in full force, sending 35 shots towards the Toms, with 22 on goal. The big and aggressive team brought intensity, but the Tommies defense exhibited nothing but grace under pressure. They faced ten corners, with two coming in the last four minutes of regulation and contributed seven team saves. The defense, headed by Max Hand and Halvor Houg, stayed collected and composed as they battled the Western Michigan attack.
Sophomore goalie, Tucker Mann, had fourteen saves this match, with several coming off of dangerous free kick attempts.
There was an equal offensive fight by the Toms. Their pressure in the midfield and upfront, led by Sam Holton, Jack Gleckler, and Josh Grzesiak, kept Western Michigan frustrated and unsettled. With 16 shots and 11 on goal, the Tommies took an established Division I team and gave them a challenge.
This was the first goal in the regular season for freshman Charlie Holton. The ball was served by Stu Sain, headed by Max Hand, and sent in by Holton in the 35thminute.
The Toms have continued to show their resiliency and power by battling hard in games and being patient with the process. They take on Oral Roberts (5-1-1) on Saturday, October 2ndat 1:00 p.m. in Saint Paul, before heading to Denver the following weekend.
Coach Lowery on the game: "I'm incredibly proud of the guys for the way they exemplified what we are trying to build, and for the way they approached and overcame difficult moments. They continue to show resiliency and push through tough days. We want them to ultimately enjoy the opportunities brought by the new experiences of this season and continue to get better, which is what they did today."
