St. Thomas hosts Oral Roberts in first home Summit League match

10/2/2021 4:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Tommie Men's Soccer applied pressure but fell short in a home loss to Oral Roberts on Saturday. The Golden Eagles were able to capitalize on chances, giving them a 3-0 Summit League victory, a game that was closer than the score in equal pressure and offensive work.

St. Thomas spent a lot of time in Golden Eagle territory in both halves, led by outstanding intensity from senior George Marty. The Tommie attack applied pressure continually throughout the game. They were fired up and dialed in but were unable to capitalize on their considerable chances.

The Toms defense was sharp and relentless, with major contributions from junior Jack Gleckler and senior Halvor Houg. Sophomore goalie Tucker Mann, made nine saves for the Tommies. Oral Roberts had the advantage in corners, and the St. Thomas defense was challenged from the get-go, facing three in the first 15 minutes. However, they maintained composure and continued to fight.

The Golden Eagles had 19 shots with 12 on goal. They brought a quick offense and took the game in their favor. Oral Roberts scored in the 15th minute off of a rebound header. Their second goal bounced off the far post and ricocheted to the near post before going in during the 68th minute. The third Golden Eagles' goal came off a strike from a late breakaway in the 89th minute.

This was the first home Summit League game for the men. St. Thomas (0-9-2) travels next weekend to play at Denver (5-2-1) on Saturday, October 9 at 5 p.m. Their next home match is Saturday, October 23 against Omaha (2-4-1) at 1 p.m.

Coach Lowery on the game: "It was a good conference match, and we came in with a great mentality. We made some really good adjustments during the game to press them in spots that we were letting them out of earlier on. For our team, the attitude and work rate are there, and they are ready to prepare for our next game."
