Men's Soccer scores first Summit League goal in game at Denver

10/9/2021 10:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Faris Colic connected with George Marty in the 47th minute to give St. Thomas its first conference goal as members of the Summit League. The Toms battled in a tough road game against Denver, falling 3-1.

Denver has won all but one regular season Summit League title since joining in 2013. The Toms represented well in their first matchup against the conference powerhouse, despite missing captain Halvor Houg to injury.

Both teams saw a lot of early offensive action, with several shots from each side in the first twenty minutes of the half. The Pioneers were able to capitalize twice, scoring in the 8th and 10th minutes. Although Denver came out fast, St. Thomas made adjustments that allowed them to put pressure on the Pioneers and keep the game competitive. The Purple fought hard, with significant contributions in the midfield from junior Jack Gleckler.

The second half began with the Tommies able to seize an opportunity in the 47th minute. The first conference goal for the men came off a great team effort, starting with the midfield forcing a Pioneer turnover. Senior George Marty served the ball, tallying his first assist of the season. Freshman Faris Colic had a great run to the back post and scored his first collegiate goal.

Head coach Jon Lowery has an optimistic takeaway from the game. "Today we were able to learn a lot about competing in the altitude and how Denver plays that we can take moving forward. You can do your best to watch film and prepare for teams, but it's when you're in those moments that you learn the most about your opponent. It was a great experience to play Denver for first time, as they have been standard of Summit League for years. Both sides recognize there will be a great rivalry between our programs, and we look forward to future opportunities playing them." The Toms continued to battle with high energy and kept the game competitive. Denver (7-2-0) added a late goal to secure the victory.

St. Thomas (0-10-2) is on the road again next weekend against Summit League opponent Western Illinois (0-9). Kickoff is on Saturday, October 16th at 4:00 p.m. in Macomb.
