Freshman Charlie Holton scored the lone St. Thomas goal in a 2-1 loss on Saturday. Shots were firing from both sides, with Western Illinois able to capitalize on a pair of set pieces.
Saturday's conference matchup found the Toms playing on a rugged windy day and a rough practice field, against an equally hungry Leatherneck team. While this made for some challenging circumstances, the men came out ready to fight, and were persistent in doing so for all ninety minutes.
The game began with some great attacking chances from the Tommies. Holton's goal came in the 8th minute off an assist from senior Josh Grzesiak. Grzesiak sent the ball from the right side, with Holton running down the left and launching it into the back of the net.
While the Toms tried to utilize this momentum, Western Illinois equalized off of a long throw assist in the 15th minute. St. Thomas struck back right away with a round of shots from George Marty and Charlie Holton, and sent forth several more before the end of the half.
The second period began with the Leathernecks playing sharp. St. Thomas adjusted and responded well, but Western Illinois scored a go-ahead in the 82nd minute off of a corner. The game was physical, with twenty-seven fouls committed and five yellow cards awarded between the two teams.
The Tommies were strong front to back. Senior captain Halvor Houg was able to return as a center back, working with junior Jack Gleckler in a strong and consistent defensive performance. Seniors Sam Holton and George Marty were menaces in the midfield, organizing well, playing dangerous, and attacking tough for the men. Up top, Charlie Holton and Josh Grzesiak were bright on the wings. The pair brought pressure and a threatening offense for the Tommies.
St. Thomas (0-11-2) returns home next weekend to play conference opponent Nebraska-Omaha (4-5-1). The game is on Saturday, October 23rd, at 1:00 p.m.
Head coach Jon Lowery on the game: "We're in a tough spot being this close. While it's not where we want to be, we have continued to stick together and learn as we go. We are looking forward to the games to come and are seeking to use the remaining time to get the wins the guys want. If we keep trusting the process, it will come."
