Kathryn Larson repeats as Player of the Year

2/24/2017 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

St. Thomas senior Kathryn Larson was a repeat choice as MIAC Player of the Year in women's hockey.

Larson joined three teammates -- junior Allie Borgstrom and sophomores Leah Schwartzman and Demi Cooper -- on the 20-player All-MIAC team. Anna Williams made the six-player All-Rookie team.

It was the third All-MIAC honor for Larson and second for Schwartzman. Borgstrom made honorable mention last season.

Larson, the reigning MIAC Athlete of the Week, scored 13 goals and 11 assists in 18 MIAC regular-season games. She had four goals and one assist in three games last weekend to help the Tommies go 2-0-1 and bump up one spot and claim a home playoff game. She had a goal and an assist Feb. 15 in a 4-2 win at UW-Stevens Point. After a 1-1 tie last Friday at St. Olaf, Larson came back with three goals in last Saturday's 8-2 defeat of the Oles. It was just the fourth hat trick this season by an MIAC men's or women's hockey player.

Larson has 57 points in 52 games as a Tommie. She has played 106 games in all four college seasons -- including her two seasons at Bethel -- and has 122 points (64 goals). UST is 16-4-4 in games when Larson has scored a goal.

Schwartzman has eight goals and eight assists in 16 games since the holiday break. Her 46 career points include seven goals last season and 13 this winter. In 18 MIAC games thiss eason she contributed 10 goals and eight assists.

Cooper had no points in 13 career games entering the Jan. 13-14 weekend. She had two goals and two assists to help the Toms post a 2-2 tie and 3-2 overtime win over St. Mary's. Cooper added two assists the next series against St. Catherine, and now has three goals and 10 assists over her last 15 games.

In 81 career games, Borgstrom has 12 goals and 23 assists. That includes five goals and seven assists in 18 MIAC games this season.

St. Thomas (11-10-4) is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1). It plays Hamline Feb. 24, with that winner advancing to the Feb. 25 semifinal game at top-seed Gustavus.
