McGlade's late goal saves 1-1 tie

1/30/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, freshman Maddie McGlade delivered with a goal for the St. Thomas women's hockey team, saving the 1-1 tie with Augsburg and a key point in the MIAC standings on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Arena.

The goal, which was McGlade's sixth of the season, came with just 3:33 remaining in regulation and sent the game to overtime, where the two teams skated to the tie.

The win gives the Tommies an 8-7-3 record overall and a 7-1-3 mark in the MIAC to remain alone in second place among conference schools, while Augsburg is now 6-8-4 overall (4-4-3 MIAC).

The first period saw UST out to a 9-6 advantage in shots, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first 20 minutes, sending them to the locker room in a scoreless tie at the first intermission.

St. Thomas again held the distinct shot advantage in the second period, outshooting Augsburg 7-3, but it was the Auggies who were able to get on the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead.  Callen Naasz received an assist from Abigail Dickinson to score the goal and give her team the advantage headed to the final period.

The Tommie women extended their shot advantage in the third, this time with a 14-5 advantage in the period, but could not seem to get the bounce they needed.  With time winding down, McGlade rose to the occasion and punched one in with less than four minutes remaining to tie the score.  Hannah Bird and Rachel Friberg were credited with assists on the goal, which sent the game to overtime.

Although UST was graced with a 4-2 shot advantage and a power play in the extra five minutes, the Tommies could not find the needed goal to take the win and settled for the draw.

For the game, St. Thomas outshot Augsburg 34-16.  Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play.

Tommie goaltender Taylor Neisen made 15 saves in the tie and moves to 2-4-1 on the year.  Her counterpart, Erika Allen, stopped 33 of the 34 shots she faced and is now 4-5-4.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon at St. Thomas Ice Arena in the second game of the conference home-and-home series.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m., start.
