Final two periods send women's hockey to 4-1 win

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Tied 1-1 after the first period, the St. Thomas women's hockey team went on to score three unanswered goals over the final two periods to capture a 4-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday afternoon at St. Thomas Ice Arena.  With the win, the Tommies improve to 9-7-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the MIAC, while the Auggies drop to 6-9-4 overall and 4-5-3 in league play.

Freshman Maddie McGlade got the game's scoring started with a goal just 1:49 into the contest.  One night after delivering UST's only goal, McGlade kept her hot hand rolling to give the Tommies the early 1-0 lead.  Nuala Flood and Dani Lobejko assisted on the play.

Augsburg answered at the 10:06 mark when Kayla Fuechtmann scored to tie the game at one apiece.  Ashley Koncz assisted and the two teams went to the locker room tied 1-1 at the first intermission.

From there, it was all Tommies.  After the two teams played through a majority of the second period in a scoreless tie, UST's Courtney Umland gave her team the lead at 17:22.  Erika Bjorkman was credited with the assist, as St. Thomas went to the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

The Tommies tacked on two more goals for good measure in the third period, both courtesy of senior Tara Baago.  Baago scored the first goal just 3:49 of the period with an assist from Heidi Winiecki before adding another at 10:23 on the power play with a dime from Umland.

The pair of goals gave UST a 4-1 lead, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the afternoon, giving the Tommies the win.

St. Thomas outshot the Auggies 39-26 on the afternoon.  The Tommies were also 1-for-4 on the power play, compared to 0-for-3 for Augsburg.

Tommie goaltender Taylor Neisen made 25 saves in the win and improves to 3-4-1, while Erika Allen falls to 4-6-4 in a 35-save effort.

St. Thomas will be back on the ice next Friday when it hosts Bethel at St. Thomas Ice Arena.  That game is set for a 7:30 p.m., start.
