Men's soccer earns 1-1 tie with St. Olaf

ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas men's soccer team captured a much-needed point in the MIAC standings when it recorded a 1-1 tie with conference-leading St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon at South Field.

The Oles took a 1-0 lead shortly before halftime, but the Tommies came back to tie the game midway through the second half to force the draw.  With the result, UST moves to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf is now 11-3-2 overall and 6-0-2 in league play.

St. Olaf scored in the 44th minute to break a scoreless tie in an otherwise evenly played first half.  Brenden Johnson crossed the ball in front to Jens Undlin at the top of the box.  Undlin spun and put a drive on net, finishing in the bottom left corner of the goal to put his team in front 1-0.  The goal was Undlin's 12th of the season.

After going into the locker room trailing 1-0 at the half, the Tommies put the pressure on the Ole defense, creating a number of chances in the offensive end.  Finally UST broke the seal on the goal in the 75th minute.

The Tommies drew a corner kick chance, which resulted in a header goal by Johnny Mulvahill.  Miles Stockman-Willis bent the corner kick to the near post, where Mulvahill finished the play off with a header just inside the post to tie the score 1-1.

Each team had chances to score in the overtimes that followed, but neither could put one away in the tie.

For the game, St. Thomas held a 12-9 advantage in shots, which included a 6-5 edge in shots on target.  St. Olaf held the upper hand in corner kicks by a count of 5-4.

Tommie goalkeeper Mitchell Wolff tallied four saves, including multiple diving saves, and is now 7-4-2 on the year.  His counterpart, Ben Braman, registered five saves in the tie.

St. Thomas will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 28th in Northfield, Minn.  The Tommies will take on Carleton College at 3:30 p.m.
