2/19/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

L, 1-3
St. Catherine, February 19, 2010

Mel Gerten stopped 25 of 26 shots and Cassie Rooney scored a third-period unassisted goal to give St. Catherine a 3-0 lead and it held on to post a 3-1 win over the host Tommies in Friday night's MIAC women's hockey game in Mendota Heights.

St. Catherine (15-4-1 overall, 10-4-1 MIAC) ended a 19-game losing streak to the Tommies and beat them for just the second time in the 12-year history of the series. The Wildcats remain in a first-place tie with Gustavus, a 3-2 winner at St. Mary's.

The Tommies (12-8-2, 10-4-1) answered moments later with a power-play goal by Kaylee Keys (assisted by Korinne O'Connor and Jenny Schnaible) to pull within 3-1 but couldn't get closer.

Michaela Michaelson scored seconds into a power-play chance midway through period two to give SCU a 2-0 lead. Ashley Grell pushed in a loose puck in front of the net at 17:48 of period one for the first goal.

The Wildcats had a 27-26 edge in shots.

UST's Lindsey Wilson had 24 saves.

The teams play Saturday in Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m. at Ridder Arena.

Gustavus won 3-2 at St. Mary's, after taking a 3-0 third-period lead.
