1/3/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey
Senior Jackie Carroll scored two power-play goals in a 1:47 span midway through the second period and the host Tommies (9-2) held on for a 2-1 win over No. 1-ranked Amherst (6-2) in non-conference women's hockey play Saturday at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies killed off all five Amherst power-play tries, including three in the final 13:30. Amherst had a 12-3 advantage in third-period shots.
Junior All-American goalie Lauren Bradel stopped 26 of 27 shots for St. Thomas, while Amherst's Caroline HU stopped 21 of 23 in 58:53 in net.
Justina DeBruzzi and Kristine Beese assisted on both goals for St. Thomas.
After Carroll's back-to-back goals, Amherst's Lindsey Harrington converted a penalty shot for a goal just 33 seconds later to cut the lead to one.
"It was a very good game, very even," said St. Thomas coach Tom Palkowski. "Both teams hit a couple of pipes and had some good chances. It certainly was a good win for us."
Amherst had moved into the No. 1 spot in the Division III rankings four weeks ago after a 3-0 win over then No. 1-ranked Middlebury. The Jeffs lost 3-0 Friday night at No. 8-ranked Gustavus.
The Tommies are off until a Jan. 16-17 showdown series vs. Gustavus.
