Men’s Hockey earns third period comeback victory, again

1/2/2026 11:38:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Hayes Hundley scored the game winning goal in the final minute against Ferris State

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (10-7-3, 7-3-2) started 2026 the same way they ended 2025 with a third period comeback, a goal in the final minute, and three CCHA points. This time the Cardiac Tommies did so against the Ferris State Bulldogs (4-17-0, 3-10-0) on Friday night at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.

Ferris State opened the scoring at 14:07 in the first period and doubled its lead at 13:32 in the second period.

The Tommies began their long crawl back at 4:40 in the final frame. Shortly after a second failed power play sequence, Jake Braccini finished off a skilled breakout from his teammates Lucas Van Vliet and Alex Gaffney to break the seal on their 28th shot. Just over three minutes later, Mason Poolman tied the contest on a prayer from the corner on an impossibly sharp angle shot at 7:17. Caige Sterzer and Lucas Wahlin teamed together to set Poolman up.

Their pesky opponents sucked the air out of the building just 26 seconds later and regained the lead at 7:43.

Luc Laylin tied things up at 15:32 on a near post poke shot under the pad of the Bulldog goaltender. Nick Williams made the play happen by cutting through a pair of defenders before he fed a slot pass to Laylin. Dylan Godbout earned the secondary assist in his first game back since November 11 after being sidelined due to injury.

It was another defender who made a similar play in the waning moments of regulation to put the Purple out in front. Hayes Hundley picked up the puck on the half wall left by Van Vliet. The freshman defenseman cut toward the crease, dangled the puck around the netminder, and backhanded it home at 19:18. Gaffney passed the puck to Van Vliet, and both forwards earned their second assists on the night.

Nathan Pilling potted an empty netter at 19:33 to sew the game up for the Tommies. Carsen Musser got the win between the pipes with 21 saves for his fourth consecutive victory. The sophomore goaltender is 5-0-1 in his last six starts.

The Tommies outshot the Bulldogs 37-24 and both sides came up empty on the power play (0-4 FSU & 0-2 UST).
