Men’s Soccer opens 2025 season at home against Presbyterian

Jon Lowery’s new-look Tommies look to make a splash this fall
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Soccer (4-10-2 overall 2024) returns to the pitch for a non-conference game with the Presbyterian Blue Hose (6-8-2 overall 2024) of the Big South Conference on Thursday, August 21 at noon out at South Field. The Tommies then head on the road for a matchup with the Chicago State Cougars (3-11-1 overall 2024) of the Northeast Conference in Chicago on Sunday, August 24 at 1:00 p.m.

Mathis Guffroy – Offensive Player to Watch
-Transfer from Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) where he tallied 47 career goals and 27 assists
-2024 NAIA All-American, 2024 Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year, 2024 All-SAC First Team
-Led the SAC with 19 goals and 13 assists in 2024
Moritz Krenc – Defensive Player to Watch
-Made 27 starts between the pipes for the Tommies in two seasons, including all 16 in 2024
-Led all Summit League goalkeepers with 91 saves and a 5.7 saves per game average in 2024
-Registered a career-high 10 saves against Oral Roberts on October 12
Preseason Poll
The Denver Pioneers were picked to finish first in the preseason coaches' poll by Summit League head coaches. The Pioneers were ranked No. 3 in the USC Preseason Poll and No. 4 in the Top-Drawer Soccer Preseason Poll. They were the No. 3 national seed a season ago and advanced t the College Cup for the second time in program history.
Reigning tournament champion Kansas City was tabbed to finish second after collecting one first-place vote and registering 30 overall points. The Roos made the program's deepest run in the 2024 postseason, advancing to the third round and were ranked No. 18 in the USC preseason poll and No. 13 in the Top Drawer poll.
UMass, who is one of two new affiliate members for 2025, was selected to finish third with 28 points and claimed the remaining first-place vote. The Minutemen, who tied for third in the Atlantic 10 regular season in 2024, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals a season ago after earning and at-large bid.
The Tommies earned six points and were picked to finish last of the seven schools in the Summit League this season.
Scouting the Blue Hose
Presbyterian is headed by third-year skipper, Nick Finotti. He is the third head coach in the program's Division I history. The Blue Hose jumped to DI in 2007. They are coming off a 6-8-2 overall record last season with a 2-4-1 mark in the Big South Conference where they finished tied for sixth place. High Point won the regular season title but was upset by Gardner-Webb in the final. Gardner-Webb fell to the Denver Pioneers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Blue Hose did not play any Summit League opponents last season and have not matched up with a Summit League program since a 2-0 loss to Denver in 2012.
They do not return one of their top three scorers from last season. They accounted for 20 of their 34 goals (59%) during the 2024 campaign. The Blue Hose also lost their goaltender who played in every game last season.
PC has added 22 newcomers to the 2025 roster. Steven Cordova, Bryce Burdette, and Jonas Sundli-Hardig are three of the 12 returners and were each named Big South Returning Players to Watch.
Scouting the Cougars
Chicago State has been under the same head coach, Norris Howze, since the 2022 season. Last year, his Cougars went 3-11-1 with a 2-5-1 record in the Northeast Conference. This is the third matchup between the Tommies and Cougars. Each side has taken a game on their home pitch. The Purple came away with a 2-1 victory the last time the teams met in 2023.
The Cougars did not return any of their top three scorers from last season who scored 11 of their 16 goals in 2024. They will also be starting a new man between the pipes this campaign.
