Baseball opens series with 14-6 victory over South Dakota State

Tommies split Friday games against the Jackrabbits

St. Paul, Minn. --   St. Thomas baseball opened its series against South Dakota State with a Thursday afternoon contest at Koch Diamond. Due to inclement weather, the game was suspended until Friday afternoon.  St. Thomas (18-14 overall, 12-4 Summit) completed game one with a 14-6 victory, followed by a loss to South Dakota State (8-25 overall, 5-10 Summit) at Koch Diamond on Friday.
 
GAME ONE (W, 14-6)
South Dakota State opened scoring in game one of the Summit League series. After a scoreless second frame, a two-run home run by Joe Roder put the Tommies in the lead through three innings.
 
The Jackrabbits responded with a three-run top of the fourth, regaining the 4-3 lead after four.
 
A three-run fifth inning, led by a Joe Roder 2-RBI double, put St. Thomas in the lead once again.
 
Continuing his dominant performance, Roder recorded his second home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth frame. Matthew Maulik then followed up with a solo home run, putting the Tommies up 10-6 through six.
 
Adding four runs across the seventh and eighth frames, the Tommies earned the 14-6 victory in the series opener.
 
Roder finished game one recording four hits, two home runs, and six RBI in the victory over the Jackrabbits.
 
Marcus Kruzan, Zak Endres (3-1), and Carl Cano combined for 10 strikeouts against South Dakota State.
 
GAME TWO (L, 3-0)
South Dakota State once again opened scoring in game two. Scoring three runs across the first three innings, the Jackrabbits held the 3-0 lead through the remainder of the contest.
 
Tanner Recchio and Brigs Richartz posted multi-hit games in game two at Koch Diamond.
 
Walker Retz (4-1) totaled nine strikeouts, allowing four hits over 6.2 frames on Friday afternoon. Kody Dalen tallied five strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work.
