Men’s Golf finishes with strong final round at GCU Invitational

The Tommies shaved nine strokes off their previous best team round of the tournament
PHOENIX, Ariz. – St. Thomas Men's Golf bounced back after struggling on day one with its lowest team score of the tournament to climb two spots on the leaderboard and finish tied for 13th out of the 18 teams competing in a very competitive field at the GCU Invitational.

The Tommies finished the tournament 30 strokes over par with a 296-299-287—882, two strokes behind Omaha and six strokes behind Kansas City, the two other Summit League programs in the 18-team field.
It was a battle on day one for the Purple. They were led by Matthew Armstrong who recorded his best round of the tournament at even par, 71. He added three birdies and bogeyed three as well. Owen Rexing and Gavin Newkirk led the way for the second round, each recording a 72 (+1).
Rexing and the Tommies rebounded on the second day for the third round. The junior went two strokes under par (69) to move up to a tie for 24th place on the individual side. He rallied off two birdies and two bogeys, it was his eagle on the 10th hole that made up the difference. Rexing scored a 75-72-69—216 to lead St. Thomas.
Matthew Armstrong shot a 71-77-76—224 (+11) and finished in a tie for 68th place with Gavin Newkirk and eight other golfers. Newkirk went 78-72-74—224. The final two Tommie golfers, Tyler McNeive and Zach Rouleau tied for 78th place at +12. McNeive shot a 76-78-71—225 and finished strong with an even par third round while Rouleau went 74-78-73—225.
