The Tommies defeated DePaul and fell to Butler in a pair of one run games
CHICAGO, Ill. – St. Thomas Softball (1-1 overall) split their first action of the 2025 season with a 5-4 loss to the Butler Bulldogs (0-1) and a 6-5 win over the DePaul Blue Demons (1-1) on Friday night to kick off the DePaul Dome Tournament at The Dome.
Kaitlyn Raymond led the way for the offense with five hits, a double, a triple, eight total bases and an RBI while hitting from the three-spot in the lineup for both games. Ella Cook and Avery Wukawitz also had big days with the bat, each belted three base hits. In total the Tommies recorded 18 hits, four doubles, a triple and 10 runs between their first two games of the season. Christina Crawford recorded her first win of the season with six+ innings of strong work in the circle.
Game One Recap
The Butler Bulldogs jumped on St. Thomas starting pitcher, Keira Murphy, early with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs chased Murphy from the game with one out in the third inning and the bases loaded. The Tommie sophomore pitcher tossed 3.1 innings with two earned runs, four hits, and four walks.
Ella Cook entered the ballgame for Murphy and worked out of the bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth. The Tommies had five basen runners through four innings but were held scoreless and behind the Bulldogs, 2-0.
Butler added to its lead with a leadoff solo home run to begin the fifth inning. Cook buckled down in the frame and recorded two strikeouts to keep the Bulldog lead to three runs. The senior finished her day with three K's in total.
Ruby Moore led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and advanced to second on Avery Wukawitz's single to center field. With one out recorded in the inning, Kaitlyn Raymond loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Ella Cook delivered with a bases clearing double to right center field to tie the game at three.
The Bulldogs tagged Cook for two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on four infield singles and an error. Cook carried her relief appearance into the seventh inning but after striking out one batter and allowing three more hits to load the bases, freshman Ava Kleinfeldt made her collegiate debut.
She did her job and induced an inning-ending double play with a sharply hit ball to Cassidy Carby at third base. The junior touched the base with her glove and rifled a throw to Kameron Monson who applied a run-saving tag in front of home plate.
Kaitlyn Raymond led off the bottom of the seventh inning with an automatic double over the left field fence on one hop. Ella Cook added another hit to reach base as the tying run. Zoe Trotter made her collegiate debut as a pinch runner for Cook. Laken Lienhard loaded the bases with a single to left field and Marleigh Louvar pinch ran for Lienhard.
Abbi Stierlen flied out to right field to sacrifice home Raymond and make it a one run game. Zoe Trotter got caught in between second and third and fell to a rundown to become the second out of the inning. Monson struck out swinging to end the game with the tying run on second base.
The Toms finished the game with 10 hits and one error. Avery Wukawitz (2-4, R), Kaitlyn Raymond (3-4, 2R, 2B), Ella Cook (2-3, 3RBI, BB, 2B), and Ruby Moore (1-2, R, BB) each reached base safely multiple times.
Game Two Recap

The Tommies answered back to tie it the very next frame. Laken Lienhard led off with a walk, followed by an Abbi Stierlen walk. Ruby Moore stepped up to the plate with two runners in scoring position and two outs. The nine-hole hitter belted a double to the outfield to score both runners. Crawford worked a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning.

The Tommie pitcher worked her way into some trouble in the bottom of the final frame. She allowed back-to-back singles and then a walk to load the bases with no outs. Head coach Jen Trotter made a similar call to the one made in the first game, bring in the freshman Ava Kleinfeldt.
With 0.2 innings of college softball under her belt, Kleinfeldt stepped into yet another big spot late in a close game. She hit the first batter faced, 6-3. Then she traded an out for a run, 6-4, and then another out for a run, 6-5. After allowing the tying run to advance to third on a double, the freshman recorded the first strikeout and first save of her career. The Tommies pulled out the 6-5 victory.
