Tommie Softball opens 2025 season with DePaul Dome Tournament

Tommies travel to Chicago for five games in three days against Butler. DePaul, Green Bay, and Detroit Mercy

ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of St. Thomas Softball is back in action with its first competition of the 2025 season after a third-place finish in the Summit League a season ago. The Tommies return 19 from that 16-34 (8-9 Summit League) team and welcome in five freshmen for the 2025 campaign. 
 
Jen Trotter returns for her fourth season at the helm of Tommie Softball as does her right hand woman, Jen Walter. The two Jens will be joined in the dugout this season by Kristi Villar. For more on Coach Villar click HERE.
 
2025 Season Begins
The Tommies head down to the Rosemont Dome in Rosemont, Illinois, just outside Chicago for the DePaul Dome Tournament hosted by the Blue Demons. This will be the Tommies' third time at the tournament after a brief one-year break from the competition last season. They were 2-3 in 2022 and 1-4 in 2023.
 
The schedule has St. Thomas playing Butler and DePaul at 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7th, followed by games with Green Bay and DePaul at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, and then with a 9:00 a.m. contest with Detroit Mercy on Sunday. 
 
The Matchups
St. Thomas vs. Butler – Field 2 – 2:30 PM – Friday

  • Butler leads the series, 1-0 all-time. The two teams battled it out in 2022 at the DePaul Dome Tournament and the Bulldogs won 7-0. 
  • Butler (23-29, 11-13 Big East) finished 7th in the Big East last season, they lost in the first round of the Big East Tournament to Creighton. They return their best offensive player, #1 Ella White (.343/.455/.645, 10 HR, 45 RBI, 30 BB) and their innings pitched leader, #15 Katie Petran (15-8, 3.46 ERA, 174 IP). 
St. Thomas at DePaul – Field 1 – 5:00 PM – Friday

  • DePaul leads the series, 1-0 all-time. The Blue Demons came away with the victory in 2022 at the DePaul Dome Tournament, 8-3. 
  • The Blue Demons (9-38, 4-20 Big East) finished last in the Big East a season ago. They did not return their leading offensive threat, #8 Brooke Johnson nor their most productive pitcher, #20 Brenna Smith for this season. Both players exhausted their eligibility last year. 
St. Thomas at Green Bay – Field 1 – 10:00 AM – Saturday

  • The Tommies have dominated the all-time series against the Phoenix with a 9-3 record and wins in eight of the last nine games since 2022. St. Thomas swept Green Bay in four games last season by scores on 13-1 and 7-1 at King Park in Green Bay and 5-4 and 7-1 at South Field in St. Paul. This game will be the first between the two teams on a neutral site.
  • Green Bay (9-38, 5-19 Horizon) took last place in the Horizon League last season. They do not return their best offensive player from a season ago, #8 Samantha Saloun but do return one of their starting pitchers, #22 Ava Schill (4-14, 5.21 ERA, 90 IP). 
St. Thomas at DePaul – Field 1 – 3:00 PM – Saturday St. Thomas vs. Detroit Mercy – Field 1 – 9:00 AM – Sunday 
  • Live Stats
  • This will be the first game between the two sides in program history. The Tommies are 11-3 all-time against Horizon League teams.
  • Detroit Mercy (6-38, 5-18 Horizon) finished above only Green Bay in the Horizon League last season. The Titans do return their most consistent offensive threat from last season, #3 Trinity Fessler (.254/.358/.441, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 19 BB) and their innings pitched leader, #27 Jordan Kavanagh (2-19, 8.37 ERA, 109.2 IP).
