The Tommies split with Stephen F. Austin and New Mexico on Saturday
Game One Recap
The Tommies got on the board early and often against Stephen F. Austin but could not hold onto their lead in the late innings. A trio of doubles in the top of the first inning propelled the Toms to a 3-0 lead. Ella Cook doubled Cassidy Carby home after she reached second with a two-bagger. Abbi Stierlen then roped a double to the outfield to score Cook and Avery Wukawitz.
Carby added to her productive weekend with an RBI single that scored Adrianna Young in the second. Ruby Moore walked with the bases loaded to score Wukawitz and put the Tommies ahead, 5-0.
Keira Murphy worked two scoreless frames but allowed one run in the bottom of the third. She allowed an RBI single after a two out walk and hit by pitch put two runners on base.
St. Thomas added another run in the top of the fourth with three consecutive singles from Laken Lienhard, Cook, and Wukawitz. The Lumberjacks answered with two runs of their own on two hits and an error, Murphy worked out of the inning by stranding two runners on.
The Tommies left two runners on in the top of the fifth and SFA took advantage of a lead off single and a one out walk from Murphy. Ella Cook replaced the starter with one out and runners on first and second. She walked back-to-back hitters and then allowed an RBI single. Four runs scored in the inning to but SFA in front, 7-6.
Both teams added a run in the sixth inning to bring the score to its final stop, 8-7 in favor of the Jacks. Abbi Stierlen flew out to center field to sacrifice home Wukawitz who tripled to lead off the inning.
Ella Cook received the loss for her 1.2 innings of work. She allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, two walks, and two strike outs. Keira Murphy worked 4.1 innings with five runs allowed (four earned) on seven hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
Avery Wukawitz had a phenomenal game going 3-for-3 with a walk, RBI, run, and triple. Cassidy Carby, Ella Cook, Abbi Stierlen, and Adrianna Young each recorded multi-hit games.
Game Two Recap
The Tommies continued their run of scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the first when Ella Cook singled Avery Wukawitz home with two outs. The Tommies' starter, Ava Kleinfeldt struck out one in the top of the scoreless first.
She followed up that scoreless frame by striking out the side for the first time in her young career. Kameron Monson got on base with a one out single, but the Toms did not score in the second.
Kleinfeldt worked through four innings without allowing a run before the Tommies gave her some insurance in the bottom of the fourth. Laken Lienhard led off the inning with a double, Kyllie Weingart entered the game to pinch run for the Tommie shortstop. After two outs were converted in the inning, Adrianna Young pushed Weingart to third with an infield single and then stole second on the next pitch. Ruby Moore came through in the clutch with a two RBI single to the outfield. Kaitlyn Raymond doubled home Moore for a 4-0 Tommie lead.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Kleinfeldt worked herself into a jam that led to four runs for the Lobos. After loading the bases with no outs, Christina Crawford entered the game to pitch for the Tommies. The senior walked her first batter and then allowed a single up the middle to score a second run.
Kleinfeldt returned to the game in the same situation she left but now with a two run lead as opposed to a four run lead. She hit the next batter (4-3, Tommies), struck out the next Lobo, allowed a single to right field (4-4 tie), and then worked out of the inning. One of the four runs ended up on Crawford's ledger, the rest were attributed to the freshman.
After blowing a lead in the first game and now the second game, the Tommies were determined to escape with a victory. Familiar names came through for the Toms in the bottom of the sixth. Adrianna Young doubled to right center field with one out and then Ruby Moore singled her home to retake the lead.
Ava Kleinfeldt struck out two in the top of the seventh and secured her first collegiate win. She recorded all 21 outs despite being pulled from the game and then returned to the game in the sixth. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits, one walk, one HBP, and a career-high nine strikeouts.
Moore came through with the game-winning hit and three RBI. She, along with Raymond and Young, recorded multi-hit games. Raymond's two hits consisted of a double and a triple.
