The Tommies secured four points from their weekend series with the nationally ranked Mavericks
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Late heroics from St. Thomas' Chase Foley pushed the Tommies (11-12-5 overall, 8-8-4 CCHA) into overtime where they captured one point from the #15 ranked Minnesota State Mavericks (18-8-2, 13-5-2) on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Caige Sterzer scored his sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend from his line-mates, Cooper Gay and Jake Braccini. Chase Foley knotted the game up at two in the final two minutes of regulation from Lucas Wahlin and Chase Cheslock. Aaron Trotter stopped 19 of the 22 pucks he faced. The Tommies were 0-2 on the power play (only 37 seconds) and 3-3 on the penalty kill (2:37).
Recap
Minnesota State scored the game's opening goal in the first period for the second consecutive game. Luc Wilson's shot was the first of the contest for the Mavericks at 5:12. They outshot the Tommies nine to four in what was one of the most balanced periods of hockey of the season for St. Thomas.
The second period began with 4-on-4 hockey, but neither side took advantage of the open ice. Lucas Wahlin put the puck in the back of the net at 2:19, but just moments before he released the shot, the play was deemed offside. Taking umbrage with the seemingly late shot, MSU's Jordan Power displayed his displeasure with Wahlin and both were given roughing after the whistle minors. The Toms got the only shot on goal during the game's second 4-on-4 sequence.
St. Thomas scored again at 10:43 and this time it counted. Caige Sterzer tied the contest with his sixth of the season on a redirected Jake Braccini point shot. Cooper Gay also recorded an assist. It was the fourth goal of the weekend scored by a member of the Toms' "second line".
Similarly to game one, the Mavericks answered shortly after at 14:47. The Tommies had the shots on goal edge in the second period (13-8) but remained down one goal with 20 minutes left in regulation.
The final frame was another tremendous display of competitive college hockey with no goals to show until the final moments. Aaron Trotter was pulled from the Tommie net at 18:16 and Chase Foley tied the game at 18:52 on a highlight reel wrap-around finish. Lucas Wahlin and Foley's season-long defensive partner, Chase Cheslock assisted on the game-tying tally.
Minnesota State won the face-off and, as is the truth often in 3-on-3 overtime, controlled the puck until Rhett Pitlick scored the game-winning goal to take the extra CCHA point.
