Men set four top-10 program marks during indoor season opener

MINNEAPOLISSt. Thomas opened its 2025–26 indoor track and field season with authority Friday at the M City Classic, posting multiple meet records, a program record from senior Olivia Keller in the pentathlon, and a series of top-five all-time marks in a strong early-season showcase against regional competition.

WOMEN
The women produced the headline performance of the meet behind senior Olivia Keller, who shattered her own pentathlon school record with 3,815 points and set a meet record in the pentathlon 800m (2:12.40). Keller added a 1.65m (5-5) clearance in the high jump, tying for fourth in program history, and clocked 8.62 in the 60m hurdles portion of the pentathlon to further improve her No. 3 all-time standing.

Sophomore Danika Apple led the sprint group with a commanding day, winning the 60m dash in 7.50 and breaking the meet record in the 200m with a 25.15. Junior Rebecca Randleman finished just behind her at 25.43 for second in the 200m dash. In the 60m prelims, junior Cassia Cady ran 7.71, the fifth-fastest time in program history, and sophomore Brooke Hohenecker placed sixth in the final at 7.76.

The hurdles group matched that momentum. Sophomore Rachel Kleinhans won the 60m hurdles in 8.99, now fifth in program history, while sophomore Mariah Willard finished second in the finals after running a 9.22 in prelims—good for 10th all-time. In the pentathlon hurdles, sophomore Ella Olson posted a 9.16, the ninth-best mark in program history.

The jumps crew added sweep-level success. Freshman Jayi Wilson claimed the long jump title with a 5.75m (18-10.50) leap, ranking fourth in program history, while sophomore Jacquelyn Cole took second at 5.57m, the eighth-best mark in program history. Sophomore Brooke Wisdom secured third in the pole vault at 3.41m (11-2.25), tied for eighth all-time.

MEN
The men turned in a sharp season debut highlighted by several top-five program performances and multiple event titles. Junior Jayson Koel delivered one of the day's best all-around outings, opening with a 6.89 in the 60m dash, good for fourth place and tied for seventh in program history, before storming to a win in the 200m at 21.96.

The Tommies dominated the hurdles as freshmen Barak Barner and Seth Johnson each ran 8.35 in the 60m hurdles, placing second and third, respectively, while tying for fifth in program history. Sophomore Maki Whelan produced the program's fifth best mark in the heptathlon, finishing second with 4757 points.

In the field, St. Thomas claimed three event victories. Senior Brendan Harter cleared 2.01m (6-7) to take first in the high jump, junior Trever Schirmer launched 15.54m to win the shot put, and junior Will DiSessa recorded 14.54m in the triple jump—an event title and the fifth-best mark in program history.

QUOTABLES
Men's Head Coach Pete Wareham:
" It was really fun to get back to a track meet this past weekend. Our guys had a very good opener. If we can grow consistently off this initial performance, we will have a very good season. Every event group had strong performances. Jayson Koel was outstanding today. His performance put him near the top five of our all-time list. I also really like what our freshmen athletes did today, competing well with strong marks in their first collegiate meet. I like the attitude within our team where they are willing to work hard, willing to support each other, and willing to compete hard. Today was kind of a preseason type event and it gets us enthusiastic about our January and February indoor season."

Women's Head Coach Ashley Lucas:
"It's always great to get the early December meet under our belts and see your fall training pay off. The multi group started it off strong for us going 4-for-4 with personal bests and Olivia Keller breaking her school record once again. Then it's always great having so many put on the purple Tommie uniform for the first time. December is still very early in the indoor season, but we use it as a good check point heading into the holidays and as a coaching staff. We definitely liked what we saw and are looking forward to what's ahead."
