12/4/2025 1:33:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies take on Lake Superior State
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (6-6-3 overall, 3-2-1 CCHA) takes to the ice in December following a tremendous showing in November (4-1-2) and a five-point weekend at Michigan Tech. The Purple and Gray match up with the Lake Superior State Lakers (5-10-1, 2-8-0) who come into town following a conference split with Augustana.
So far this season, the Tommies have taken points from the first, third, fourth, and fifth place teams in the CCHA and now have six consecutive games against the seventh, eighth, and ninth place teams to finish 2025 and begin 2026. The Purple have played the fewest conference games (seven) but find themselves in the top six, four points outside of the top four.
St. Thomas' flare for the dramatic continued last weekend with a shootout win on Friday and a 2-1 comeback win on Saturday. Friday's tie was headlined by the last second game-tying goal off the stick of back-to-back CCHA Rookie of the Week, Lucas Van Vliet. The goal was his second of the game and he added the shootout winner and a third goal in game two to bolster the Toms' offensive attack. Carsen Musser got the start on Friday night, and Aaron Trotter won his second game of the season on Saturday. The Tommies are the only team in the nation to have three goalies with multiple wins this season, it is also the first time in program history.
Lake Superior State split a pair of 2-1 decisions at home against the Vikings last weekend. They also split a pair of games with the Ferris State Bulldogs two weeks ago; their Friday win had ended a four-game losing streak and six conference game losing streak. The Lakers won the season series with the Tommies last season with a road sweep in Mendota Heights and then a pair of overtime games in Sault Ste. Marie. Sophomore William Ahlrik has helmed the ship so far this season with 14 points in 16 games but did go without a point last weekend. The lion's share of time in net has gone to sophomore Rorke Applebee with his 4-7-0 record, 2.58 goals against average, and .922 save percentage. As a team the Lakers are being outscored 3.1 to 2.6 per game and outshot 33.3 to 26.6. Their 17.2 PP% is sixth in the CCHA and their 72.2 PK% is last.

Van Vliet added on with the game-winning goal on Saturday, a shorthanded tally to send St. Thomas back to St. Paul with a lion's share of the points.
