Lucas Van Vliet added another two points in the loss
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Special teams woes early in the Tommies' (6-7-3) matchup with Lake Superior State (6-10-1) put them a few steps behind all night long on Friday at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. Lucas Van Vliet added a goal and an assist to stretch his career-best point streak to six games.
Lake State drew a pair of penalties in the very first minutes of the contest, first on a Quinton Pepper hold in the offensive zone and then an Alex Gaffney delay of game penalty for playing the puck with his hand on the faceoff. The Lakers capitalized with power play goals at 2:25 and 3:47.
Van Vliet and the Tommies cut the two-goal deficit in half with a power play goal of their own at 17:02 from Nathan Pilling and Chase Cheslock. The freshman slammed home a one-timer from outside the near dot between the left pad of Rorke Applebee and the near-side post for his sixth of the season.
Both sides came up empty for over 20 minutes until the Lakers scored their third power play (on their third chance) at 17:25 to restore their two-goal lead.
Jake Braccini cut the lead in half at 3:07 on a slick near side shot after streaking up the boards from zone to zone. Chase Cheslock tipped the puck ahead to spring the Tommie senior for his second assist of the night.
Lake State scored just moments later at 4:35 and then once more at 7:22 to take a 5-2 advantage. Nathan Pilling scored with under five seconds to play from Van Vliet and Cheslock, but this time the late-game heroics did not produce any conference points.
Friday night was Chase Cheslock's first career three-point game and Van Vliet's fourth career two-point game. The Livonia, Mich. Native has added points in six straight games with multi-point games against Augustana, Michigan Tech, and Lake State.
St. Thomas outshot Lake Superior State 47-31.
