Lucas Wahlin scored two, Carsen Musser stopped 27 of 28
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Lucas Wahlin's even strength goal at 3:47 was the first game-opening goal for the Tommies (7-7-3) in seven games and led them to a dominant 4-1 win over Lake Superior State (6-11-1) on Saturday at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
The Lakers did answer back 28 seconds later, but it was the only shot they got by Carsen Musser of the 28 that they took. The Utah Mammoth draft pick stacked save after save in his best performance as a Tommie.
Lucas Van Vliet stretched his point streak to seven games with the game-winning power play goal at 7:22 from Chase Cheslock and Nathan Pilling. It was also the second power play goal of the weekend for the freshman. The Tommies completed the trifecta (ES, PP, SHG) at 13:59 with a Lucas Wahlin shorthanded goal. The captain is the fourth different Tommie to score a shorthanded goal this season. Pilling poked the puck to Wahlin for his third assist of the period.
St. Thomas added their fourth and final goal of the contest at 8:49 of the second on a dramatic play. Jake Braccini potted the puck home for the second time this weekend but took out the LSSU goaltender in the process. He earned a charging the goaltender minor penalty that the Toms killed it off with ease. Cole Miller and Ryan O'Neill earned the assist on the Braccini tally.
Lake State pulled their goalie with nearly seven minutes remaining in regulation but failed to climb back into the game despite outshooting the Toms 10-8 in the final frame. The Tommies outshot the Lakers 33-28.
The game was Nathan Pilling's first multi-point game and Lucas Wahlin's fifth multi-goal game of his career. Carsen Musser earned his third win as a Tommie.
