Tommies fall in Homecoming battle 21-14

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas football team came up just short in a hard-fought Homecoming matchup Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, falling to Butler University in overtime, 21-14. With the loss, the Tommies move to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Pioneer Football League (PFL) play.
QUICK HITS:
- Senior quarterback Andy Peters (Boise, Idaho / Timberline) led a 15-play, 75-yard opening drive to give St. Thomas an early 7-0 lead.
- Butler outscored St. Thomas 14-7 in the first half and held a 14-7 lead entering the fourth quarter.
- Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) was named the 3KeyLogic Player of the Game after a 69-yard receiving performance, including the team's first touchdown.
- Peters accounted for both Tommie touchdowns, adding a one-yard rushing score to cap a 51-yard drive in the fourth quarter.
- Nick Hand (Rogers, Minn. / Totino-Grace) paced the defense with nine tackles and one forced fumble.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas struck first as Peters connected with Cobb-Butler on a 29-yard touchdown pass midway through the opening quarter. Butler responded with a 70-yard scoring drive to even the score at 7-7.
Second Quarter: After its first drive, St. Thomas' offense was limited to just 178 total yards on its remaining possessions, as Butler took the lead late in the half on a two-yard touchdown run. A Tommie drive in the final minutes ended with an interception in the end zone, keeping the Bulldogs ahead 14-7 at halftime.
Third Quarter: Both defenses tightened up, producing a scoreless quarter. St. Thomas' defense held Butler to 45 yards in the period to stay within one score.
Fourth Quarter: The Tommies tied the game at 14 early in the fourth on a one-yard quarterback sneak from Peters. In the closing seconds, St. Thomas had a chance to win in regulation, but a 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked as time expired.
Overtime: St. Thomas won the toss in overtime, electing for the second offensive possession. Butler did manage to drive to the Tommies one yard line when it appeared Jordan Pendleton (Memphis, Tenn. / Lausanne Collegiate School) won the game on a scoop-and-score fumble. However, Pendleton was called offsides, and the Bulldogs scored on the very next play. St. Thomas was unable to answer, despite advancing to Butler's four-yard line.

- Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) was named the 3KeyLogic Player of the Game thanks to his 69-yard performance.
- Andy Peters (Boise, Idaho / Timberline) closed the game with 193 yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown in the second quarter.
- Defensively, Nick Hand (Rogers, Minn. / Totino-Grace) led the team with nine tackles and one forced fumble.
- The Tommies' defense allowed just 3.7 yards per play in the second half and overtime.

The Tommies will hit the road for their next PFL contest, as they trek to Davidson, North Carolina. Kickoff between St. Thomas and Davidson is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.
