ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas Tommies (1-0, 0-0 PFL) are set to face off against the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks (1-0, 0-0 MVFC) in what promises to be an exciting matchup. This game marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams in the Division I era, as both enter with a 1-0 record.
PREGAME FESTIVITIES:
This game coincides with the 60th Annual Potato Bowl USA, which takes place annually in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The week long festivities, which start on Monday, August 31, include a golf tournament, Baked Potato Bar at all Hugo's locations, the World's Largest French Fry Feed, and a parade. ST. THOMAS: St. Thomas opened the season with an exciting 15-9 victory over Winona State on Thursday, August 27. The Tommies held a 9-3 lead into the fourth quarter, bolstered by a rushing touchdown from QB1 Anthony Policare (Endwell, New York / Endwell-Maine)—his first collegiate touchdown—and a 31-yard field goal by Ben Hoiland (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View). Although Winona State tied the game late in the fourth quarter with a touchdown run by Jahmani Muhammad, Policare led a subsequent 47-yard touchdown drive. Pierce McCrary (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Kennedy) secured the lead by recovering a Luke Schuler fumble in the end zone, with less than a minute left in regulation. Peyton Himley (Edina, Minn. / Edina) then clinched the win with his first collegiate interception.
NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota is coming off a commanding 42-21 victory over LIU, and they were ranked #9 in the AFCA Top-25 poll and #8 in the StatsPerform Top-25 poll this week. St. Thomas aims to improve its record against Dakota teams, currently standing at 2-3, and seeks its first win against a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) team.
KEY STORYLINES:
NEW YORK MINUTE: St. Thomas quarterback Anthony Policare made an impressive debut in his first collegiate start, leading the Tommies to a 15-9 victory over Winona State. In his collegiate debut, and first game since the 2022 New York High School State Championship game, Policare threw for 166 yards, completing 13 of 22 passes, with one touchdown and zero interceptions.
MILESTONE VICTORY: Tommies Head Coach Glenn Caruso continues to build on his record as the winningest coach in program history, boasting a career record of 165-39 at St. Thomas.
