INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — It was a rough Saturday for the University of St. Thomas football team. St. Thomas lost to Butler University 41-14 in a crucial Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest. The Tommies offense was limited to just 199 passing 77 rushing yards and lost the turnover battle with two fumbles and an interception. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 7-3 overall and 4-2 in PFL play.
QUICK HITS:
- Anthony Policare (Endwell, N.Y. / Maine-Endwell) threw for 152 yards Saturday and scored one rushing touchdown. Nick Peipert (Barrington, Ill. / Barrington) rushed for a team-leading 38 yards and a touchdown and completed 3-4 passes.
- Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) recorded 73 receiving yards on six receptions.
- Charlie Boucher (Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) led the team with eight tackles.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: Things were going well for the Tommies to start the game. St. Thomas led 7-3 after the opening quarter thanks to a touchdown from Peipert. The quarterback successfully piloted a 71-yard touchdown drive following a Bulldog field goal, securing a lead for the Tommies in the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Things took a turn in the second. St. Thomas was held scoreless while Butler scored on two rushing touchdowns and a 32-yard field goal. The scoring barrage allowed the Bulldogs to walk into the locker room with a 20-7 halftime lead.
Third Quarter: The Tommies' third-quarter answer came after their defense forced a turnover on downs at its own 27-yard line. The offense followed with a 77-yard drive, capped by Policare's nine yard touchdown run and Ben Hoiland's (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) PAT to cut the Butler lead to 27-14. Despite giving up an early Bulldog touchdown, it looked like the Tommies had the momentum in the fourth, as another key defensive stop gave St. Thomas the ball at the Butler 49.
Fourth Quarter: The comeback was not meant to be. The Tommies were held scoreless in the fourth quarter while Butler added touchdowns on Gabe Passini's 29-yard pass to Michael Nix and Michael Dellumo's 56-yard run, closing the game at 41-14. The Tommies' longest possession of the quarter covered 66 yards, with Policare converting fourth down on a 9-yard pass to Eli Paulson (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) before the drive ended on downs. Bakari Edwards (Homestead, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) later stopped a Butler fourth-down rush, but St. Thomas was unable to covert it into points.
