ST. PAUL, MINN. - The University of St. Thomas football team is back to its winning ways. The Tommies dominated en route to its first Pioneer Football League (PFL) win of 2025, defeating Davidson by a final score of 57-13. It marks the first time St. Thomas scored 50+ points in a game since 2021, the first season of Division I play. With the win, the Tommies are now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in PFL play.

QUICK HITS:

  • St. Thomas scored five rushing touchdowns on Saturday, the most in a game this season. Patrick Bowen (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Dillard) rushed for two and Joseph Koch (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) three while the Tommies rushed for 184 combined yards.
  • Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) recorded his second 100+ receiving yard game this season, recording 137 yards on four receptions and one touchdown.
  • JaShawn Todd (Los Angeles, Calif. / Oaks Christian) was outstanding on special teams, rushing for 121 yards on two returns, including a season-long 77 yards.
  • Four Tommie defenders recorded a team-leading seven tackles in the game.

SCORING SUMMARY:

First Quarter: St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead behind a strong start on both sides of the ball. The Tommie defense set the tone as Ryan Calcagno (St. Charles, Ill. / St. Francies) intercepted a pass on Davidson's opening drive, giving St. Thomas excellent field position. That set the tone for the remainder of the first quarter, as quarterback Andy Peters (Boise, Idaho / Timberline) gave the Tommies an early 7-0 lead thanks to a 29-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Bowen (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Dillard).

Second Quarter: St. Thoams built on that first quarter momentum, scoring 22 points in the second to bolster its lead to 29-0 at the half. The defense continued to make plays, as Charlie Boucher (Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) forced and recovered a fumble deep in Davidson territory, stopping the Wildcats at their own four-yard line. The takeaway set up another scoring opportunity for the Tommies, who capitalized behind touchdowns from Joseph Koch (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) and Bowen. A successful two-point conversion rush by Stefano Giovennelli (St. Louis Park, Minn. / St. Louis Park) capped a dominant first-half effort for St. Thomas on both sides of the ball, as the Tommies walked into the locker room with a 29-0 halftime lead.

Third Quarter: The big plays kept on coming in the third quarter, as St. Thomas extended its lead to 50-7. The Tommies opened the quarter with a bang, as Amari Powell (Valencia, Calif. / Chaminade College Prep) found Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) for an 85-yard touchdown reception, the longest of the DI era. Bowen and Koch continued to dominate on the ground, as both scored touchdowns in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Both the Tommies and Wildcats scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Jackson (Lagrange Park, Ill. / Lyons Township) found Giovannelli for the first touchdown of his career with the Purple. Davidson also scored in the final 15 minutes of the game, resulting in the 57-13 final score.

TOMMIE TIDBITS:

  • Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) was the top receiver on Saturday, recorded 137 receiving yards on four receptions with one touchdown.
  • Andy Peters (Boise, Idaho / Timberline) closed the game with 190 yards, while Amari Powell (Valencia, Calif. / Chaminade College Prep) recorded 148 on a 3-4 passing performance in the second half. Ryan Jackson (Lagrange Park, Ill. / Lyons Township) made his collegiate debut.
  • Patrick Bowen (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Dillard) and Joseph Koch (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) scored three touchdowns each Saturday afternoon.
