St. Thomas opens Panther Invite with wins against Iowa, Illinois State

Tommies beat Redbirds in five sets, Hawkeyes in four sets to open tournament
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Tommie Volleyball secured the program's first win over a Power Five opponent as part of two wins Friday to open the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. St. Thomas took down Illinois State in five sets (25-9, 16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-6) before beating Iowa in four sets (25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19).
Sophomore Morgan Kealy recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 10 digs to lift the Tommies over the Redbirds while senior Lauren Galvin led with 18 kills. Kealy added 43 assists against Iowa as four Tommies totaled double digit kills. Junior Ella Voegele averaged 4.4 digs per set, including 28 in the win over the Hawkeyes.
Illinois State – W, 3-2
The opening match of the Panther Invitational couldn't have started better for St. Thomas as it opened on an 11-3 run to force an Illinois State timeout. Redshirt freshman Addie Schmotzer began scoring with her first of five total kills while six Tommies recorded a kill during the streak. The Purple hit .500 with four service aces as a team to cruise to the opening set win, 25-9.
Both teams alternated higher hitting percentages each set as the Redbirds hit .385 to win the second set and .220 to take the fourth set. The third set featured 12 ties and seven lead changes, the final coming a block assist from junior Megan Wetter and sophomore Ellie Gustafson late in the game. The block helped sparked a 5-1 run to win the set, 25-22.
Like the first and third games, the Tommies took hold of the final set with a 7-1 opening run. Senior Lauren Galvin chipped in three kills, finishing with a team-high 18, during the run. ISU cut the Tommie lead to three, 9-6, before closing with six straight points.
Iowa – W, 3-1
St. Thomas continued its momentum from the previous match with a 6-3 start over Iowa, powered by junior Tezra Rudzitis with two kills and a service ace by junior Allie Kopp. The lead held until 9-6 when the Hawkeyes went on a 6-0 run. Two Iowa errors started an 8-1 St. Thomas run to take the final lead of the game. The Purple recorded five kills over its final six points, including a kill from Schmozter to win the set, 25-19.
The Tommies' first kill of the set again came from Rudzitis to start a 7-2 run as five Tommies recorded a kill. After extending the lead to six, 10-4, Iowa began a comeback to take its first lead of the set. The Hawkeyes scored seven of eight points to go ahead, 16-14, but the Purple followed with an 8-2 run and held off another late Iowa run to secure the set, 25-23.
Iowa grabbed the first lead of the third set before two team errors and a kill from Wetter gave St. Thomas a 3-2 lead. The Hawkeyes scored three straight and held the lead until a 6-0 run, started by Rudzitis' fifth and final kill of the set, gave the Tommies a 19-15 advantage. Iowa scored four straight as part of six ties to close the game. Tied 24-24, an Iowa kill and St. Thomas error gave the Hawkeyes their lone set win.
The final set got started in the same fashion as the second as St. Thomas went on a 10-4 run. A pair of kills from each Gustafson and Wetter pushed the lead to 6-3 while Kealy, Schmotzer and Galvin each recorded kills to end the streak. Iowa slowly chipped away at the St. Thomas lead, bringing it to 21-19. A trio of kills from Gustafson and Wetter was part of four straight points to secure the program's first win over a Power Five opponent, 25-19.
Top Tommies
· Sophomore Morgan Kealy recorded her third straight double-double and fifth this season with 39 assists and 10 digs against Illinois State before the streak was snapped against Iowa. Her 43 assists against Iowa are her second most in a match in her career, as Kealy is now up to 975 career assists.
· Senior Lauren Galvin led the Tommies in kills on the day with 28, 18 against Illinois State and 10 against Iowa. She led the Tommies in kills for the sixth match this season, hitting .318 against the Redbirds. Galvin's career kill total has now risen to 804.
· Juniors Tezra Rudzitis and Megan Wetter both recorded double digit kills in each match. Rudzitis tied for the team high with 14 against Iowa and added 11 against Illinois State, while Wetter hit 12 kills against ISU and 11 against Iowa.
· Sophomore Ellie Gustafson tied Rudzitis for the team lead with 14 kills against Iowa, leading the team with a .324 hitting percentage.
· Junior Ella Voegele averaged 4.4 digs per set, including 28 in four sets against Iowa.
