St. Thomas Volleyball swept Milwaukee for its sixth win over the last seven matches
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- St. Thomas volleyball secured its second straight non-conference tournament title Saturday at the Panther Invitational following a sweep over host Milwaukee (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) in Klotsche Center. The Tommies (6-4, 0-0 Summit) have won six of their last seven matches as sophomore Morgan Kealy surpassed the 1,000-career assist mark against the Panthers (4-5, 0-0 Horizon).
In reaching the career milestone, Kealy finished Saturday with 42 assists and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and fourth among the last five matches. Junior Tezra Rudzitis and sophomore Ellie Gustafson led the Tommies with 15 kills each as Rudzitis finished with a .565 hitting percentage compared to Gustafson's .483. Gustafson also recorded a double-double, her first of the season and sixth of her career, with 10 digs.
St. Thomas hit a season-best .359 from the floor and matched a season high nine service aces while allowing a season high .288 hitting percentage to Milwaukee. Saturday's match was the second for St. Thomas when hitting above .300.
Sets one and two remained close from start to finish as neither team took a lead of more than four points. Milwaukee grabbed a four-point, 7-3 lead but four straight Tommie points, including back-to-back kills by senior Lauren Galvin, tied the game. The teams traded leads three times before St. Thomas nabbed the final lead on an ace from Galvin. Gustafson gave the Tommies their largest lead, 23-19, on a kill before her sixth and final kill of the set secured the opening win.
The Panthers led for just three points in the second set, including the first point of the game, while the Tommies held Milwaukee off for about three points through most of the set. Junior Megan Wetter's fifth kill of the match pushed the Purple ahead, 16-13, to force a MKE timeout. The Panthers scored six of the next eight points before Rudzitis sparked a 6-2 run to end the set, 25-22.
The Tommies could do no wrong to start the third game, scoring the first 10 points behind three kills from Rudzitis, two from Gustafson, and two service aces from junior Ella Voegele. The Tommies added another two aces to push its lead to a set-high 14 points, 19-5 and withheld a late attack by the Panthers.
