Volleyball wraps Rumble in the Rockies with loss at Wyoming

Kocon and Schmidt lead with nine kills each in 3-0 loss
LARAMIE, Wyo. — The University of St. Thomas (0-2, 0-0 Summit League) fell to the University of Wyoming (2-0, 0-0 Mountain West) in straight sets, 20-25, 21-25, 17-25, at Arena-Auditorium on Sunday. The Tommies recorded a .233 hitting percentage while the Cowgirls posted a .437 hitting percentage in the match to wrap the season-opening Rumble in the Rockies tournament.

- Audrey Kocon and Anya Schmidt led the team with nine kills each. Kocon hit .261 from the floor while each added one service ace.
- Morgan Kealy totaled 31 assists while the team hit .233.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One: St. Thomas opened the first set with a strong performance, maintaining a narrow lead early on with key kills from Addie Schmotzer and Audrey Kocon. Morgan Kealy facilitated the offense effectively, assisting multiple successful attacks, including a service ace by the team that marked a brief momentum gain. Despite a series of service errors, the Tommies managed to counter UW's advances with critical plays, including a block by Kocon and Schmotzer that extended their lead to 11-6. However, the Cowgirls closed the gap with a four-point run, ultimately overtaking the visitors to win the set 25-20.

Set Three: The Tommies struggled to gain momentum in the third set, despite some strong offensive plays. Kealy provided consistent assists, setting up key kills for Emory Brosnahan and Kurth, but the Cowgirls' defense proved resilient. Schmotzer also contributed with a kill, narrowing the gap to 6-4 at one point. However, UW's Rylee Heinz and Paige Lauterwasser were instrumental in maintaining their lead, ultimately securing the set 25-17. The match concluded with this set.

St. Thomas opens its home schedule Sept. 3-5 with the St. Thomas Volleyball Invitational Tournament in St. Paul, Minn. The Tommies open the tournament against Montana State on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. at Schoenecker Arena.
