Tommie women’s soccer travels to Marist and Siena for two non-conference games.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's soccer heads into week three of the 2024 season without a win through their first three games. They hope to change that as the head into the eastern time zone for games against the Marist Red Foxes (0-2-1) and the Siena Saints (1-2-0) of the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The Tommies fell to both the Northern Illinois Huskies and Minnesota Golden Gophers by a score of 4-1 last week. The Purple's only goal in DeKalb, Ill. Came off the head of Lexi Huber and Abby Hoiska scored their only tally against the Gophers at South Field.
St. Thomas has never played Marist or Siena, but have one matchup with a MAAC opponent under its belt since transitioning to Division I. The Toms blanked the Niagara Purple Eagles 7-0 at home during the 2023 season. Niagara finished 5th in the conference with a 4-4-2 conf. record while Siena (3-4-3) and Marist (2-5-3) finished 8th and 9th respectively.

The Gophers jumped on the Tommies quickly with a goal just over four minutes into the contest. The game, originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., began at 11:00 a.m. due to the excessive heat. Sophia Romine scored the opening tally with an assist from Khyah Harper.
Harper stole the show with goals in the 39th, 50th, and 86th minutes after lending a helping-hand on Romine's score.
The Tommies placed four shots on goal and Hoiska's in the 78th minute was the only to get past Gopher goalkeeper, Sarah Martin. Molly Knoblauch made a great pressuring play and deflected a would-be pass from a Minnesota defender into clear space. Hoiska read the play perfectly and gained control of the ball. She patiently waited until Martin made her move and chipped it into the back of the net.
The Gophers finished the contest with 11 shots (six on goal) to the Tommies' eight (four on goal). Minnesota also out chanced the Purple in corner kicks (10 to 2). St. Thomas was whistled for 15 fouls against the Gophers' nine. No cards were shown in the matchup.
Noticeably missing from the Tommie back line was senior captain, Abby Brantner, who was serving a suspension for her handball red card from last Thursday against Northern Illinois. In her place, and making the first start of her season, was Annika Eckroth. She played all 90 minutes alongside Lissa Mizutani and Sydney Kubes.
Kubes has now played every minute of the 2024 season through three games.
Scouting the Marist Red Foxes
The Red Foxes and Tommies have something in come, they are both winless through three games in 2024. Something's got to give. Marist started the season with a road loss to Seton Hall, 2-1. They then ended in a scoreless tie with NJIT in New Jersey. Home was no haven for the Red Foxes, as they fell 1-0 to Bryant last Sunday.
Nicole Pacapelli helms the Marist Red Foxes who finished 2-9-5 (2-5-3) a season ago.
Their lone goal this season was scored by grad student, Maille McDermott. Junior, Maddy Catalanotti, has started in goal all three games and has played 270 minutes. She carried a 1.00 goals against average and .800 save percentage, she has made 12 saves.
Scouting the Siena Saints
Siena is currently 1-2 and play the Le Moyne Dolphins before meeting with St. Thomas on Sunday.
Steve Karbowski is entering his 26th season as the head coach of the women's soccer team. He is the winningest coach in program history.
March to the Summit
The Tommies were picked to finish eighth out of the nine teams in the Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll after their 1-5-2 conference record in 2023.
Last season's regular season conference champion Denver Pioneers were voted to the top of the poll edging out challenger South Dakota State by two points (61-59). The Purple finished with 15 votes, placing them between North Dakota State (24) and North Dakota (14).
Both Mariah Nguyen and Olivia Rowe were named Players to Watch by the conference office.
Nguyen led the Purple in goals (five), points (12), and shots on goal (13) last season while Olivia Rowe started every game between the posts in 2023 and earned five shutouts.
