Stifling defense leads Women’s Soccer to first win of 2024

8/29/2024 8:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Tommies allowed just three shots on goal as the defeat the Marist Red Foxes on the road.

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Lexi Huber's third-minute goal was enough for the St. Thomas Women's Soccer team (1-2-1) to down the Marist Red Foxes (0-3-1) for their first win of the 2024 season on Thursday night at Tenney Stadium in southern New York.

Huber's goal was her second of the season. Olivia Rowe earned her sixth career shutout with three saves.

Recap
Marist may have started the contest with possession but the Tommies took advantage of an early striking opportunity. After winning the ball at mid-field Lexi Huber pushed just inside the penalty box on the far side of the field and rifled two shots toward Marist's freshman goaltender, Samantha Graf. The first was blocked directly back onto the boot of Huber who then slashed a long-range shot into the back of the net.

The Tommies took the lead two minutes and 39 seconds into the game and did not look back.

The Purple's offense acted as defense with a majority of the first half being played on the Red Foxes' end of the field. St. Thomas placed five shots on goal and 11 shots overall during the first 45 minutes. They allowed just one shot on goal on the defensive end, saved by Olivia Rowe in the 31st minute.

Marist came out in the second half and played a much more balanced style. They matched with the Tommies at two shots on goal a side. The Red Foxes played well with their backs against the wall, forcing a clean sheet in the latter half despite six Purple corner kicks (four in a three minute span).

The final shot of the game came in the 81st minute as Rowe made her third and final save.
