Men’s Soccer opens the 2024 season with win over Northern Illinois

The first collegiate goal for John Bence and clean sheet by Moritz Krenc help secure a victory for the Tommies
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team opened its 2024 campaign against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Thursday evening. With 15 new faces on the Tommie roster, St. Thomas looked to set the tempo early for the 2024 season. The Tommies (1-0) defeated Northern Illinois (0-1) on South Field, earning the win in their first of nine home matches.
After a scoreless first half, St. Thomas continued its offensive pressure, scoring the lone goal of the match in the 66th minute of play. Holding the lead through the remainder of the game, the Purple earned a shutout victory over Northern Illinois on South Field.
RECAP
The Tommies started the match aggressive offensively against the Huskies. St. Thomas' first shot of the match came in just the second minute by Vitus Voitl. Continuing the offensive pressure, Jorge Perez tallied two shots on goal in the first half, adding one more in the second frame.
The duration of the first half remained scoreless, with each squad recording two shots on goal headed into halftime. Adding two shots on goal early in the final half, St. Thomas kept pushing to put the ball past the Northern Illinois goalkeeper.
Soon after, John Bence recorded the Tommies' first goal of the season, tallying his first collegiate goal in game-winning fashion.
The Purple continued to play lock-down defense, shutting down the Huskies' attack in the final minutes of the game to defeat Northern Illinois. Krenc finished the match totaling five saves in the shutout victory.
