Crawford pitches gem, Tommies split with North Dakota

4/13/2024 6:36:00 PM | Softball

Christina Crawford tossed a complete game shutout in 1-0 game one win, Tommies drop game two 5-4.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team faced off against the University of North Dakota in a doubleheader conference matchup. The Tommies kicked off the series with a strong shutout win in the first game. However, despite a solid effort, they came up just one run short in the second game, stranding the winning run on first in the bottom of the seventh in a 5-4 ballgame.

In the first game, Christina Crawford took to the circle for the Purple and delivered a solid performance, limiting the opposition to just three hits while striking out seven batters to secure the complete game shutout victory. However, despite a stronger offensive showing in the second game, where the Tommies managed to score four runs on seven hits, they ultimately fell short of clinching the win.

GAME ONE RECAP
For the first four innings, the game remained a shutout affair. Christina Crawford held firm on the mound, allowing only two hits during that stretch. However, in the fourth inning, she conceded a one-out triple, posing a threat to the shutout. Undeterred, Crawford maintained her composure, retiring the next two batters, one of them by way of a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Tommies sparked their offense after another brilliant inning in the field. Sydney Mickett got things rolling with a lead-off double, setting the stage for a potential rally. Avery Wukawitz followed suit by drawing a walk, showing discipline at the plate. Kaitlyn Raymond's ground ball advanced both runners, positioning them on second and third. Laken Lienhard reached base on a fielder's choice, narrowly missing a scoring opportunity as pinch runner Maddie Grad was tagged out at home. However, Lienhard's steal and Morgan Klein's subsequent walk loaded the bases with two outs. With a full count, Cassidy Carby demonstrated patience and discipline, earning a walk that scored Wukawitz, sealing the game's lone run.

Christina Crawford and the Tommies' defense showcased their resilience in the latter innings, retiring six out of the next eight North Dakota batters to secure the shutout victory in the first game. Crawford's stellar pitching performance, coupled with the team's solid defensive efforts, stifled any potential comeback attempts from the Fighting Hawks.

GAME TWO RECAP
After a shutout in game one, the University of North Dakota wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second matchup, notching the first run of the game in the opening inning. However, the Tommies' Keira Murphy rebounded swiftly in the second inning, striking out two batters and holding the Fighting Hawks scoreless.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Toms found their offensive rhythm. Cassidy Carby continued her hot streak with a leadoff double, igniting hopes of a rally. Following her lead, last weekend's hero Abbi Stierlendelivered with a single. Carby seized the opportunity to score a run on a Fighting Hawks throwing error, putting the Tommies on the scoreboard and tying the game at one.

After both St. Thomas and North Dakota breezed through a one-two-three third inning, the action heated up in the fourth as both teams found their offensive stride. The Fighting Hawks struck first, tallying three quick runs to grab an early advantage. Despite the challenge, sophomore Morgan Klein took to the mound for St. Thomas, showing resilience by conceding only two more runs while securing three crucial outs.

After battling through eight foul balls to start the fourth, Morgan Klein displayed impressive patience at the plate, earning a lead-off walk to kickstart the rally. Cassidy Carby followed suit, drawing a walk of her own to put two runners on base. With the pressure mounting, Abbi Stierlen stepped up to the plate and unleashed a powerful drive deep into left field, clearing the bases with a three-run home run. Stierlen's clutch home run narrowed the North Dakota lead to just one run.

Klein continued to pitch well for the Purple retiring six straight batters in the fifth and sixth innings.

After Klein retired three more batters, extending her streak to ten consecutive outs, the Tommies entered the bottom of the seventh with a chance to mount a comeback.

Avery Wukawitz kicked off the inning with a deep hit, but it was caught after being held up in the unwavering wind for an out. Kaitlyn Raymond sparked hope with a single up the middle, setting the stage for Laken Lienhard, who mirrored the hit, advancing Raymond to second. With two runners on base, North Dakota managed to secure the final two outs, sealing the victory.
