Softball dominates in Green Bay

4/10/2024 7:05:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies completed their first sweep of the season, outscoring the Phoenix 20-2.

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The St. Thomas Softball team (9-30, 3-6 Summit) compiled two of their most complete games of the season against the Green Bay Phoenix (7-26, 3-9 Horizon) to complete a 20-2 sweep of Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader.

GAME ONE RECAP
Ella Cook took matters into her own hands with a complete game win in the circle and a perfect three-for-three performance at the plate with two home runs, five RBI, and a walk. Her second home run of the game placed her atop the Summit League leaders with eight in 2024.

Although the Tommies ultimately won the contest 7-1, the hosting Green Bay Phoenix got on the board first with a two-out single in the second inning. Cook stranded the bases loaded in the frame and did not allow another run for the remainder of the game.

The Purple answered the Phoenix run with four of their own in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Raymond singled up the middle with one out and after a steal of second, Laken Lienhard walked. In stepped Ella Cook and she met the moment with an opposite field three-run home run. Cassidy Carby jumped on Green Bay's starter and went back-to-back with a home run of her own.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Lienhard led off the fifth with a double to the left-center field gap. Once again Ella Cook stepped up to the plate with a runner in scoring position, and once again she delivered, this time with a home run to straight-away center field. Carby followed up with a single up the middle and Miki Snider got hit by a pitch. The Toms scored their seventh and final run of the game on a double steal that resulted in a Green Bay error.

Cook went the distance and allowed just one earned run on four hits, one walk, and a strikeout. She led the offensive effort going 3-3 with a walk, two HR, 5 RBI, and 2 R. Cassidy Carby and Laken Lienhard each added multi-hit performances. In total, the Toms combined for seven hits and four walks. Kaitlyn Raymond, Miki Snider, and Abbi Stierlen each recorded a stolen base.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Tommies jumped on Green Bay's starting pitcher for one run in the top of the first inning. Avery Wukawitz led off safely with a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Laken Lienhard doubled her home from second for a 1-0 Purple lead. Christina Crawford worked a perfect bottom frame.

The Phoenix got their only run of game two after a lead-off walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a passed ball. They scored on a well-hit fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly.

Three consecutive innings past by and the Toms added one run in each frame. Lienhard singled Kaitlyn Raymond home in the third. Cassidy Carby scored on an error after reaching on a one-out single. Ruby Moore scored on a Carby single in the fifth.

During that same stretch, Crawford worked a perfect third, worked around two hits in the fourth, and pitched another flawless frame in the fifth.

St. Thomas broke things open in the sixth with the second nine-run inning in program history. Crawford worked yet another perfect inning to finish off Green Bay in six innings.

Seven Tommie hitters tallied multi-hit games. Avery Wukawitz, Laken Lienhard, Ella Cook, Cassidy Carby, Adrianna Young, Kenzie Miller, and Sydney Mickett. Just three of their 14 hits went for extra bases, one double from Lienhard and two from Adrianna Young

Christina Crawford tossed an absolute gem in complete game fashion and allowed just one unearned run on two hits, one walk, and one strikeout.

The Tommie defense played errorless softball in both games of the doubleheader.
