Toms’ strong pitching falls on wrong end of 1-0 loss to Jackrabbits

3/22/2024 2:20:00 PM | Baseball

Mrosko and Skilbeck combine for 13 strikeouts and two hits allowed

OMAHA, Neb. -- Cold temperatures set the tone for a low-scoring series-opener Friday afternoon as St. Thomas fell to South Dakota State 1-0 in Omaha, Neb. The Tommies (8-11, 3-1 Summit) out-hit the Jackrabbits (11-11, 4-0 Summit) and saw a strong pitching outings from starter Jacob Mrosko and reliever Max Skilbeck.

Mrosko (2-3) went 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts, tying his second highest output of the season, along with allowing just two hits. Skilbeck finished the final 2.2 innings for the Tommies, totaling five strikeouts with the only two SDSU baserunners reaching on errors.

Both teams were retired in order over the first two innings until SDSU led off the third with a hit by pitch. A walk put runners on first and second while stolen bases set up a sacrifice fly for the lone run of the game.

Mikey Gottschalk followed with a single up the middle in the bottom of the third inning and advanced to third on a passed ball with one out. A ground out, walk and another groundout ended the Tommies' best scoring opportunity as no St. Thomas baserunner advanced to second base through the remainder of the game.

Gottschalk, Max Nyrop and Brigs Richartz accounted for the Tommies' three hits on the day, all singles. One of the Jackrabbits' two hits were for extra bases while SDSU totaled three stolen bases.

St. Thomas and South Dakota State conclude the series Saturday with games scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. from Tal Anderson Field.
