Two-out hitting leads St. Thomas to 11-5 win over South Dakota State

3/23/2024 4:22:00 PM | Baseball

Four Tommies record multiple hits and multiple RBI to hand Jackrabbits first league loss

OMAHA, Neb. -- Two-out hitting was the difference Saturday as St. Thomas handed South Dakota State its first Summit League loss 11-5 in Omaha, Neb. The Tommies (9-11, 4-1 Summit) totaled seven two-out hits, including five in the first inning, as four players totaled multiple hits and four finished with multiple RBI.

Senior Devon Schewe started on the mound for St. Thomas and retired the SDSU side in order to end the top of the first. He totaled 3.0 innings with one strikeout and two hits allowed in a no decision.

The Tommies jumped ahead in the bottom half thanks to an SDSU error and five two-out hits. Following a walk by Max Moris to put three runners on, Max Nyrop came up with a bases-clearing double as part of four straight RBI hits. Joe Vos tripled to left center field to bring in Nyrop while Mikey Gottschalk reached on a bunt single and Zan Von Schlegel doubled to right center to drive in the sixth and final run of the inning.

St. Thomas extended its lead over the next two innings with a bases loaded walk in the second and RBI hits from Brigs Richartz and Moris in the third. Overall, the Purple totaled seven hits and nine RBI with two outs.

Von Schlegell added another extra-base hit for an RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in Gottschalk on a triple with two outs to push the lead back to nine, 10-1. Richartz led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, his second hit of the day, to set up an RBI double by Moris. Moris's second RBI and fourth time on base answered four SDSU runs in the top half to give St. Thomas an 11-5 lead.

Walker Retz (2-1) earned the win after throwing 3.1 innings with six strikeouts. Bryce Leedle threw 0.2 innings while Carl Cano closed the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and no hits allowed.

St. Thomas is scheduled to host North Dakota State for a three-game series in St. Paul March 28-30.
