Baseball travels to Omaha to host South Dakota State in altered weekend games

Tommies and Jackrabbits to play March 22 with a doubleheader on March 23 at Tal Anderson Field
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas baseball team continues Summit League action against South Dakota State March 22-23 in Omaha, Neb. The Tommies and Jackrabbits will play at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 22, and will complete the series with a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Tal Anderson Field.
The series was originally scheduled to be played March 22-24 at Koch Diamond, but was moved due to weather in St. Paul.

Last Time Out
Game One – W, 4-0
• St. Thomas Baseball shutout Northern Colorado in the Summit League opener on Saturday afternoon. In game one of the doubleheader, the Tommies outhit the Bears 14-1.
• Jacob Mrosko (2-2), Marcus Kruzan and Carl Cano combined for 11 strikeouts, allowing just one hit in the first shutout of the season.
Game Two – W, 5-3
• Joe Roder recorded two solo home runs and went 4-for-5 at bat.
•Max Skilbeck (1-0) earned his first win of the season, recording four strikeouts and allowing two hits in 2.0 innings of work. Cano closed game two, earning his second save of the day and fourth of the season.
Game Three – W, 7-2
• Richartz and Roder recorded multi-hit games, as Richartz also recorded two runs on the day.
• This weekend marks the first sweep this season and second sweep of a conference opponent for St. Thomas in the DI-era.
Next up for the Tommies
• St. Thomas Baseball hosts South Dakota State in a Summit League match up.
• Both squads have opened the first weekend of conference play undefeated.
• The Jackrabbits are led by Head Coach Rob Bishop in his eighth season at South Dakota State.
• Offensively, the Jackrabbits are paced by Cael Frost who has posted a .405 batting avg. and nine home runs in 21 games played.
•In four appearances on the mounds, Nic McCay has recorded team-leading 30 strikeouts.

•The St. Thomas offense has exploded in the first month of the season, totaling 124 runs in 18 games played. In 2023, the Tommies recorded 34 runs in 15 games played in the months of February and March.

• Surrendered just one hit and fanned 11 through the first six innings
• Earned the first weekly award of his career
Summit League Preseason Poll
•Juniors Ben Vujovich (OF) and Evan Esch (LHP) were named the St. Thomas Player and Pitcher to Watch, as released in the 2024 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• St. Thomas was selected to finish sixth in the Summit Preseason Poll.
Leading the Pack
• Chris Olean begins his 15th season with St. Thomas in 2024. He has totaled an overall record of 372-222-1 (338-148-1 in NCAA Division III) since being named the head coach prior to the 2010 season.
• Olean is a three-time NCAA DIII Region Coach of the Year and closed out its DIII era by winning championships in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and region en route to a national runner-up finish and 37-10 record.
• During the last 12 DIII seasons the Purple won eight MIAC Championships, capped by third-place national finishes in both 2012 and 2014, in addition to the runner-up finish in 2021.
• Olean mentored seven DIII All-American pitchers. He was voted MIAC and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2021. In addition, Olean works with the Tommie pitching staff, which was a perennial top-10 group in DIII baseball.
