Tommies comeback falls short against Drake
11/9/2024 5:37:00 PM | Football
ST. PAUL, MINN. – Homecoming is usually a treat for the University of St. Thomas football and its fans, and there may have been no bigger match up than Saturday's Pioneer Football League (PFL) showdown. The Tommies hosted Drake University in a key conference match up, looking to secure their chances at a second PFL title in the last three seasons. Despite some strong last minute heroics, St. Thomas' comeback came up just short, as the Tommies fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 22-19. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 5-5 overall and 4-2 in PFL play.
RECAP:
It was a rather uneventful first quarter from a scoring standpoint, as neither the Tommies nor Bulldogs managed to find the end zone in the first 15 minutes of play. However, both teams scored 10 points apiece in the second, resulting in a 10-10 draw after 30 minutes of play. Drake took the early 7-0 lead on a touchdown pass from Luke Bailey to Trey Radocha and extended it to a 10-0 lead on a 45-yard field goal by Shane Dunning.
It was all St. Thomas, though, in the final 10 minutes of play. After marching into Bulldog territory, the Tommies settled for a 27-yard field goal by Ben Hoiland (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View), cutting the lead to 10-3. It looked like that would be the halftime score, but Den Juette (Chicago, Ill. / Fenwick) had other ideas. The junior nabbed his team-leading third interception with 1:23 left in the first half, setting the Tommies up perfectly for some late dramatics. And dramatics were provided. Landon Reed (Naples, Fla. / Community) played quarterback for one play, throwing a perfect pass to Tak Tateoka (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) before Hope Adebayo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) found the back of the end zone, tying things up at 10-10.
Drake was the first team to score in the second half, taking a 17-10 with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. St. Thomas hung with the Bulldogs, as another field goal by Hoiland cut the lead to 17-13 with one final quarter left to play. Unfortunately, a botched snap on a punt resulted in a Drake safety early in the fourth quarter, swinging the momentum back in the Bulldogs direction and securing a 19-13 advantage for the visitors.
St. Thomas attempted to chip away at Drake's lead, but every time the Tommies came close, the Bulldogs defense would snap any and all hope for a dramatic comeback. After a Drake field goal made it 22-13 with seven minutes to go, Tateoka started to put something together with the St. Thomas offense, eventually connecting with Colin Chase (Orange County, Calif. / St. John Bosco) for a 44-yard touchdown with 1:54 left on the clock. The Tommies, though, were unable to come up with the ball on the ensuing onside kick, resulting in the 22-19 victory for Drake.
