Football comes up short at #25 Butler 36-20

11/16/2024 3:54:00 PM | Football

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The University of St. Thomas football was looking to make a statement on Saturday. In four years of Division I play, the Tommies have never defeated a nationally ranked opponent and were looking to do so in Indianapolis on Saturday. Sadly, St. Thomas came up short to #25 Butler University, falling to the Bulldogs by a final score of 36-20. With the loss, the Tommies record now stands at 5-6 with a 4-3 record in Pioneer Football League (PFL) play.

RECAP:
St. Thomas hung with Butler through the first 15 minutes of play, as the team matched Butler point for point in the first quarter. After the Bulldogs scored the first touchdown of the game at 4:36, the Tommies responded with a touchdown of their own, as Tak Tateoka's (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) quarterback sneak evened things up at 7-7.

St. Thomas' defense surrendered just one touchdown in the second quarter, as the 7-7 score stood for nearly 10 whole minutes before Butler found the back of the end zone. Despite plenty of chances, the Tommie offense could never answer, as the Bulldogs came up with stops time and time again. However, St. Thomas had the ball for the final possession of the half, and looked to take a 14-13 lead after Butler missed the extra point on its go-ahead touchdown. After recovering a muffed punt at the Bulldog 32, the Tommies had prime field position and found themselves at the Butler nine-yard line after an 11-yard run by Hope Adebayo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley). However, St. Thomas; touchdown dreams came up short, as Tateoka threw an interception as time expired, ending the half in a 13-7 deficit.

While the Tommies were able to keep pace in the first half, they were unable to do so in the second. The Bulldogs outscored St. Thomas 23-13 in the final 30 minutes of play and scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. Still, there was life in the Tommie sideline after the third quarter. After falling behind 20-7, St. Thomas rallied to cut the lead to 20-14, as Tateoka found Colin Chase (Orange County, Calif. / St. John Bosco) for a 12-yard touchdown reception, making it 20-14 with 4:18 to go. Butler then pushed the lead to 23-14, converting a field goal in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 23-14 after three.

The Tommies were never able to respond. Despite Chase scoring another touchdown, this one a reception from Michael Rostberg (West Fargo, N.D. / Shanley), St. Thomas was never able to close the nine point gap, falling by a final score of 36-20.
