Tommies earn CCHA split with Augustana

Men’s Hockey falls in game two to the Vikings, 3-2

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Tommies (2-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) opened their CCHA schedule with a split after dropping game two to the Augustana Vikings (4-4-0 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA), 3-2 on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Ryan O'Neill ended St. Thomas' power play drought with his first goal of the season and Liam Malmquist added his third multi-point game of the season with his shorthanded tally. Aaron Trotter stopped 20 of the 23 pucks he faced while anchoring a penalty kill that did not allow a power play goal on six chances.

Recap
For the first time since October 11, the Tommies allowed their opponents to score first when Augustana got out to a quick start with a goal at 3:03. Joey DelGreco's shot was just the second of the game for the Vikings who were shutout by the Toms' goaltender, Aaron Trotter, the previous night.

Augustana took a holding penalty at 10:10 (the first of 12 minor penalties between the two sides) to give the Tommies a chance to turn their season-long power play woes around. Lucas Wahlin won the first faceoff of the power play period as the Tommies possessed the puck in the offensive zone for 39 seconds. Chase Foley fed a pass to Liam Malmquist on the blue line who hit Ryan O'Neill on the nearside circle for a one timer chance. O'Neill ripped a screaming slap shot over the shoulder of the Vikings netminder to tie the game with the man advantage.

After a parade of penalties, Augustana got the upper hand once more with a goal just eight seconds after their power play expired at 10:28. The Purple answered with a shorthanded goal on another Viking power play. St. Thomas applied strong forechecking pressure and forced a pass through the center of the ice directly onto the stick of Liam Malmquist. The senior had a free run at the net and took advantage with a well-placed wrist shot over the right shoulder of the goaltender at 15:10.

The final period began in a two-two tie but the Vikings struck once more at 8:16. St. Thomas would not have the answer this time despite placing 11 shots on goal in the final 10 minutes.

St. Thomas outshot the Vikings 40-23 and won 40 of 69 faceoffs. Tommie captain, Lucas Wahlin, led the way with eight shots on goal and a staggering 20-3 faceoff record.
