Late game penalty troubles sink Men’s Hockey

11/9/2024 12:04:00 AM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies committed six penalties and gave up four goals in the third period

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (2-5-1 overall, 1-2-0 CCHA) could not overcome six third period penalties against #16 Minnesota State (7-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 CCHA) and fell 5-3 on home ice in front of a Division I program record 1,082 attendees on Friday night.

Cooper Gay, Lucas Wahlin, and Liam Malmquist each added power play tallies in the losing effort. Malmquist earned his third consecutive multi-point game and moved his CCHA leading season point total up to 11. The Tommies committed seven total penalties for 25 minutes' worth and successfully killed four of their six shorthanded sequences. Aaron Trotter stopped 19 of the 23 shots he faced and allowed one power play goal.

Recap
The Tommies played some of their best hockey in the first 10 minutes of their game against the 16th ranked Mavericks with eight shots on goal to MSU's one through the first 11 minutes. Minnesota State's goaltender, Alex Tracy, could not be solved until the Tommies put the pieces together on their first power play with a Cooper Gay goal at 13:46 from Chase Foley and Lucas Wahlin. Gay tipped a Foley shot into the back of the net for an early St. Thomas lead.

Lucas Wahlin would double that early lead at 18:49 on the Toms' second power play opportunity. Liam Malmquist and Chase Foley earned the helpers on the play as the Tommies took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Their two-goal lead did not last long as the highly skilled Mavericks scored at 4:29 for the only goal of the period. Minnesota State out chanced the Tommies with 23 shots to 16, a complete inverse of the first period where the Toms had a 24-10 advantage.

Minnesota State was called for interference in the final minute of the second and then for hitting from behind 33 seconds into the third. The Tommies pressured the Mavericks with two shots on goal while skating 5-on-3 but could not get it through until 2:16 while on a 5-on-4 power play. Liam Malmquist screamed home his fourth goal of the season from Ryan O'Neill

The Mavericks answered back nearly instantly at 3:06 and again to tie the game at 6:43. Then the wheels fell off the proverbial bus as a calamity of penalties ensued. First, Ethan Gauer was sent to the box at 7:50 for holding and then Lucas Wahlin joined him after he was whistled for a hitting from behind at 8:31. The Mavs took the lead at 9:21 while skating 5-on-3.

Next, at 17:21 and while down a goal, Ryder Donovan made a hard charge toward the Maverick net and contacted Alex Tracy outside of the goal crease. The play was under review for a possible major and game misconduct. The officiating crew determined that Donovan struck Tracy on the head and doled out the major and disqualification. Finally, at 18:50, Wahlin committed a second infraction of the period and the Mavericks scored an empty net, 5-on-3 power play goal at 19:36.

Tommie Tidbits
  • This was the sixth game of the season in which the Tommies outshot their opponent, they are 2-3-1 in such games.
  • The Tommies began the season going 1-25 on the power play, one of the worst marks in the country, but turned it around tonight going 3-5 including goals on each of their first three opportunities. It was their first three power play goal game since last season when they put up seven goals on Ferris State on 12/2/23. It was their third three power play goal game in program history and first against a team other than Ferris State.
  • Liam Malmquist added his fourth multi-point game of the season and 12th of his career (9 last season), he leads the Tommies and the entire CCHA with 11 points in eight games, he leads the conference with 1.38 points per game as well.
  • Malmquist continued his team-high point streak to five games; he has added eight points during the streak and has now begun a three game multi-point game streak.
  • Lucas Wahlin added a three-point performance, the third of the year from a Tommie (Malmquist and Mason Poolman did it in the same game against Vermont). It is Wahlin's 13th career multi-point game and fourth career game with three points or more.
  • Chase Foley added two assists for the first multi-point game of his Tommie career and second of his 111 game career, his last was for Colorado College against North Dakota on 12/8/23.
  • Ryan O'Neill is just one point shy of 50. He would become the second Tommie in program history to amass 50 points. Lucas Wahlin became the first last season.
