Jake Braccini scored the first of his season, Sibell made 25 saves in net
MANKATO, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (2-5-2 overall, 1-2-1 CCHA) scored first but could not defeat the Minnesota State Mavericks (7-4-1 overall, 2-1-1 CCHA) finishing the first half of the season series with a 1-1 tie at Mayo Clinic HSEC on Saturday night. The Mavericks took the extra point in the shootout.
Jake Braccini scored the Tommies' goal at 15:29 in the first period, the first of his season. Ryder Donovan was the lone assist on the goal. Jake Sibell stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced in route to the tie.
Recap
Saturday night's first period began as uneventful as Friday's. At least the first half the period was quiet, both teams hit the media timeout without scoring. The Tommies outshot the Mavericks five to four before the game's first break. Jake Sibell made every save with some help from the post at 6:53.
The Tommies scored on their sixth shot at 15:29 in the first period. Ryder Donovan shot the puck from the right circle off the pad of Maverick goaltender Alex Tracy. The shot took a wide angled rebound directly to Jake Braccini who sent the puck home on a one-time shot from the inner-left hash just outside the slot.
Minnesota State evened the game at 9:53 of the second period. The Mavericks placed six shots on net to the Tommies' five. After the first 40 minutes the Tommies had the edge in shots-on-goal, 14-13. The Mavericks won 23 of the first 43 faceoffs.
Jake Sibell continued his dominance of the Mavericks with eight saves in the third period to keep the game level through the final 20 minutes. He made 25 saves in regulation to force the overtime.
The extra period was free flowing but both netminders were up to the task. Sibell made three saves in overtime and Mankato goalie, Alex Tracy stopped five to bring his game total up to 27.
The Mavericks were on fire in the shootout with goals on each of their first two attempts. Liam Malmquist buried a goal to force the shootout further before Sibell made his only stop. Lucas Wahlin scored next but so did Minnesota State. Cooper Gay could not extend the shootout any further.
