All five Tommies finished in the top-25 of the 72-golfer field
HOMER, Neb. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Golf team began the day in contention for the team win, a place they were the entire three-day tournament, but fell behind three teams on the final day despite shooting one-under-par as a team. The Tommies shot 291-296-291—878 (+2) and finished in fourth place behind Omaha (+1), North Dakota State (E), and Loyola Chicago (-16) who shot an incredible 14-strokes-under par on the final day.
Zach Rouleau finished the tournament tied for 15th place and eight strokes behind Loyola's Charlie Kulwin who took the individual crown. The sophomore entered the final day in second place after back-to-back 72's (-1) but ultimately shot a 221 (+2) after his 77 (+4) today. Rouleau shot five over on the front after a bogey on five and doubles on six and seven. He did rally for a -1 on the back with three birdies and two bogeys. He tallied 12 birdies across the 54-hole tournament.
The Tommies' other sophomore, Gavin Newkirk, also started stronger than he finished, his 71 (-2) on the first day tied for the best single round by the Toms until Owen Rexing's 70 (-3) today. Newkirk shot 71-76-75—222 (+3) and finished tied for 18th place with teammate Tyler McNeive. Newkirk's best round began with a +2 on the front nine and a scorching-hot -4 on the back with five birdies, including four on his last five holes. Like day-one, he finished strong during his final round with birdies on holes 15, 17, and 18.
McNeive bounced back from a rough second round and climbed 11 spots on the leaderboard with his third-round 71 (-1). Overall, he tied for 18th place with a 71-80-71—222 (+3). After starting today on hole four with a bogey and a double-bogey, he played bogey-less golf for the remaining 16 holes with five birdies.
Another day-three climber for the Toms was Owen Rexing whose third-round 70 (-3) was the team-low for the tournament. After struggling on days one and two, he put it together and rose 14 places on the leaderboard for a 25th place finish after shooting 77-77-70—224 (+5). Rexing left a few strokes out on the course with a bogey on 8 and doubles on 11 and 15. He added six birdies and eagled his third-to-last hole of the competition with a two on a 365-yard par 4.
Matthew Armstrong was the Tommies' final scoring golfer and tied with Rexing for 25th place. The fifth-year senior shot 78-71-75—224 (+5) and lead the way on day two with a -2. He added 12 birdies across 54 holes.
St. Thomas' independent golfers were Matthew Garside and Will Schlitz. Garside finished tied for 48th place while shooting 81-76-74--231 (+12) and Schlitz finished tied for 68th place with an 80-84-77—241 (+22).
