Offense ignites in Tommies 39-32 victory over Marist

10/12/2024 3:07:00 PM | Football

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.  – The University of St. Thomas football team is officially 2-0 in Pioneer Football League (PFL) play. Just in time for spooky season, the Tommies offense came to life, igniting for a 39-32 victory over Marist College. With the victory, St. Thomas is now 3-3 overall, and the Tommies are undefeated in PFL play with a prestine 2-0 record.

RECAP:
St. Thomas' defense set the tone on Marist's first possession of the ball game, forcing a three-and-out and looking completely dominant in the process. The Tommies offense also looked revitalized, as Hope Adebayo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) rushed for a 24-yard gain, and a first down, on the first offensive play of the game. Tak Tateoka (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) also connected with Jacob Wildermuth (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) for an 11-yard gain, giving St. Thomas multiple 10+ yard gains just minutes into the game.

The Red Foxes managed to hold the Tommies at bay the first time they ventured into enemy territory, but Marist simply could not hold off St. Thomas' offense the second time around. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Tommies offensive line, St. Thomas marched right on down to the one-yard line and took a 6-0 lead on a receiving touchdown by Matthew Rink (Lincoln, Neb. / Southwest). Ben Hoiland (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) connected on the extra point attempt to give St. Thomas the early 7-0 lead.

Three snaps of the ball later, it was a 15-0 lead for the Tommies. Nick Hand (Rogers, Minn. / Totino-Grace) picked off Marist QB Sonny Mannino and was a yard short of his first pick-six of the season. St. Thomas took full advantage of outstanding field position thanks to a good, old fashion, tush push. Mac Coy (Markham, Ill. / Marist) found the end zone on the two-point conversation, securing a 15-0 lead for the Tommies at the end of the first quarter.

If the first quarter belonged to St. Thomas, the second belonged to Marist. The Red Foxes scored 15 unanswered points in the second 15 minutes of play, fueled primarily by defensive miscues and Tommie penalties. St. Thomas was called for seven penalties in the first half with multiple resulting in first downs for Marist. In fact, two Red Fox punts transformed into first downs due to Tommie penalties and suddenly, it was a 18-15 Marist lead with two minutes to go in the first half.

Hoiland nailed a career-long 45 yard field goal as time expired, evening things at 18-18 entering the second half. Still, it was anybody's ball game as the St. Thomas offense took the field in the second half. The Tommies looked to take control, and did just that, as Tateoka connected with Wildermuth in the end zone, regaining a 25-18 advantage for St. Thomas. One minute into the fourth quarter, it was 32-18 Tommies thanks to controlling and dominant play by St. Thomas' offense and defense.

Naturally, Marist made things interesting in the fourth quarter, matching the Tommies point for point in the final 15 minutes of the game. A late touchdown by St. Thomas, though, along with extra points and a two-point conversion, proved to be the difference, as the Tommies left New York with a solid 39-32 victory over the Red Foxes.

TOP TOMMIES

  • New York treated St. Thomas starting quarterback Tak Tateoka (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) well, completing 16 of 21 passes for 122 yards. He additionally threw for two touchdowns and scored two with his legs, securing the Tommies most impressive win of the season.
  • Hope Adebayo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) continued to dominate the Red Foxes, rushing for a team-leading 113 yards on 14 carries. New Jersey kid Gabriel Abel (Trenton, N.J. / Salisbury School) also scored a touchdown for St. Thomas, tallying 74 rush yards on the day.
  • Jacob Wildermuth (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) led the Tommies with 41 receiving yards and a touchdown Saturday afternoon.

WE'RE ON FIRE!
The Tommies tallied 99-yards of total offense in the third quarter along, their most productive quarter to date this season. St. Thomas also had two drives of over five minutes in the third quarter, the first time that has occurred in PFL play this season.
