1/20/2024 10:44:00 AM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Both women and men earn one event win with 26 total personal records set

AMES, Iowa -- Sophomore Caden Nordberg took little time to stamp his name in the St. Thomas indoor track & field record book after breaking the program mark in the mile run at the Cyclone Open. He was one of 13 men's and 13 women's student-athletes to set personal record marks while both programs combined for two event wins.

Nordberg, participating in his first meet of the 2024 indoor season, ran a time of 4:08.44 in the mile to break the previous record of 4:08.78 set by Morey Smith at the Summit League Indoor Championships in 2022. The time ranks first in the Summit League this season while the Tommies set seven of the conference's top 10 times in the event.

Overall, the men recorded four top three finishes with one event win while the women came away with two top three finishes, including one win.

MEN'S RESULTS
Freshman Will DiSessa won the triple jump with a personal record mark of 13.86 meters/45-feet-5.75-inches. His jump ranks fifth in the Summit League this season while he was one of four Tommies with a top-three finish. Graduate student Grady Clem took second in the high jump with a leap fo 1.95m/6-4.75, senior Nate Raddatz finished second in the long jump with a mark of 6.84m/22-5.25 and sophomore Thomas Dundon took third in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.93. Dundon's time is a personal record and leads the Summit League in the event this season.

Sophomore Cameron Heppner took fourth in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.08, which ranks third in the conference this season. Fellow sophomore Mitchell Piehl ran the conference's fifth-fastest 400m dash in 48.94, finishing seventh at the Cyclone Open.

WOMEN'S RESULTS
Freshman Morgan Koppelman brought in the women's lone win of the day, setting a personal record in the pole vault with a leap of 3.40m/11-1.75. Sophomore Hailey Shimon took third in the weight throw with a toss of 16.58m/54-4.75 for the Tommies' final top-three finish of the day.

Junior Molly Desotell led the Purple's 3000m group with a time of 9:54.87, which ranks third in the conference, to take seventh. Three other Tommies set personal records in the event, including junior Ava Pankratz who ran the Summit League's fifth fastest time of 10:11.24. QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from men's head coach Pete Wareham on Friday's performances:
"Today was a very good day overall for our guys. I liked the focus and intensity. It translated into some terrific performances, including Caden setting the program record in the mile. We had multiple personal bests and our overall performance continues to measurably get better. This is the trajectory we want and I know myself, the coaches and the athletes are excited to keep it going."

Thoughts from women's head coach Ashley Lucas following the Cyclone Open:
"Today was a real standout for our women. We notched several personal bests and it's the direction we want to be heading. We're very excited to see more women get involved successfully and expect to see more progress next weekend back in Minneapolis."
